Choose Your Own Adventure - The October 2024 Spin Challenge

14-Oct On this day in 2018, Steppenwolf play their final show, a concert in Baxter Springs, Kansas. It was not announced that this was their last performance until November 22nd, 2019, when band leader John Kay made it official. Besides Kay, none of the musicians who appeared that day were members of the group's hit-making line-up. Expert: Play an album by a band who picked their name from a novel/poem.

Belle & Sebastian - The Boy With The Arab Strap

They named themselves after the 1966 novel, Belle et Sébastien which is about a boy named Sébastian and his dog Belle.

I've also learned that Discogs search syntax is difficult. Like if you search for "Banjo Bass" it will still give you Banjo OR Bass. Not sure how to link two words together / get a specific search criteria for multiple words together.

"Banjo bass" gives results for banjo "and" bass, if I interpreted my results correctly, but not necessarily the two words together as a string, which is what you'd want when using quotation marks.

8-Oct Hard: Play an album by a musician who explicitly works/worked to get out the vote

Maybe I could have done more thinking and reading to get to expert, but I'm falling so far behind I decided to with Hard instead of taking the time to figure out an Expert answer.

Yes exactly! I really should have been able to phrase that better given I spend a portion of my day in SQL / Databricks.

I'm a patent examiner so I spend a large part of my day doing searches... and it ticks me off to no end when I can't find a way to square hole a damn crumhorn. ;)

Though that probably says more about my dislike for medieval sounding things than anything :)

@TenderLovingKiller® Did you order a crumhorn record and are now waiting for it to arrive before continuing your spins? What did you get?
It crossed my mind but I think I am just gonna bite the bullet and choose a lesser adventure to continue. Either that or play something with another double-reeded woodwind and claim that all are a modern form of the crumhorns.

11-Oct On this day in 1975, Neil Sedaka's comeback continued with his second number one hit of the year, "Bad Blood". In the span of just eight months, he also wrote two other chart topping hits, his own "Laughter In The Rain" and The Captain And Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together". To date, Sedaka has written or cowritten over 500 songs.

Easy: Play an album by a Neil

Slowdive - Everything is Alive

I have no hope of continuing the expert picks on the coming days, so whichever of the choices each day leads me to what I feel like listening to it will be from now on!
