Choose Your Own Adventure - The October 2024 Spin Challenge

14-Oct On this day in 2018, Steppenwolf play their final show, a concert in Baxter Springs, Kansas. It was not announced that this was their last performance until November 22nd, 2019, when band leader John Kay made it official. Besides Kay, none of the musicians who appeared that day were members of the group's hit-making line-up.

Expert: Play an album by a band who picked their name from a novel/poem.

Dawn Treader - Bloom & Decay

The metal thread recommended this album of atmospheric post black metal, and I've listened to it every day since I downloaded it. I'm assuming they got their name from the boat in the third Narnia novel.

10-Oct Medium: Play a song/album about an historical event

Elvis Costello - Let Him Dangle

As I've mentioned before, my wife confessed that she doesn't like Elvis' voice, so she certainly can't deal with an album. I knew this was the second track, I was able to squeeze it in.

(and now Deep Dark Truthful Mirror is playing, and it's way too beautiful to lift the needle.)

16-Oct On this date in 2017, Ed Sheeran breaks his wrist and elbow in a biking accident, forcing him to cancel dates on his tour of Asia. He calls his time off "the most depressing six weeks of my life." Expert: Play an album by a musician who had to cancel/postpone a tour because they injured themselves (not sick, but injured).

In 1981. Martin Chambers cut his hand leading to the cancellation of Pretenders dates in the US and Canada.

The Beastie Boys / Rage Against the Machine "Rhyme & Reason" tour was cancelled in 2000 after Mike D suffered injuries after hitting a pothole riding his bike. Which I would imagine would have also been an option in this (fictional) adventure:

Rush "2112" (1976 Mercury; 2015 DMM reissue QRP pressing)
On Friday June 1st, 1979, Rush had to postpone a show in Zurich because Alex Lifeson crushed a finger between the wall and a bed during a wild night with his wife. SCORE = 2112 Canadian points

Prince was inducted into The Songwriters Hall Of Fame only this year. Obviously he wrote hits for several other artists, The Bengals, Sinéad, Chaka Kahn, Sheila E, etc… many were collected here.

15-Oct On this date in 2006, Patti Smith closes down the celebrated Manhattan music club CBGB, playing the last show at the venue. The club closes after an extended dispute between club owner Hilly Kristal and the Bowery Residents Committee. Rock fans try to preserve the building as a historical landmark, but those efforts fail and a men's clothing store moves in.

Hard: Play a musician/band who played at CBGB.
