December 2020 Challenge Thread: Let's Go Out With A Bang (The return of the raffle!)

Day 09: Most Valuable
Play your most valuable record, cost-wise or valuable to you personally
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

The thing that bums me out most about this being my most valuable record is that it is due to scarcity of an album that is so beloved by many. I almost didn’t purchase it because of the damn near $20 in shipping cost. I, like many ultimately missed out, was holding out hope that there would be some sort of distribution set up for the LP in the States. After a couple months I decided just to bite the bullet since I didn’t want to miss out. If I regret anything now it’s that I didn’t also pick up Isn’t Anything at the same time I purchased this, I mean, I was already paying for the shipping. Regardless I am happy to own this and hope Kevin Shields one day decides he needs some more money and represses a boatload more of these.

Day 9: Most Valuable Play your most valuable record, cost-wise or valuable to you personally

Tina Brooks - Back to the Tracks
Tina Brooks - Back To The Tracks

This is an original Japanese promo pressing. Though recorded in 1960, this album took a very long time to actually get released. The record was first released as part of the Mosaic Complete Tina Brooks box set in 1985
Tina Brooks - The Complete Blue Note Recordings Of The Tina Brooks Quintets

In 1990, Blue Note got so far as printing complete promo copies for release in Japan. The only thing marking it as a promo is the “not for sale” printed in the upper right back cover and on the record label. At the very last minute the release was pulled from the schedule but some promo copies snuck out and remained in the wild. The record was released several times in the 90’s on cd. It was not until 1999 that a stand-alone vinyl version was released.

This record is not terribly valuable, only to me personally.

I remember a lot of people over at sh.tv passing because of the shipping. For ordering both it was $63 shipped. Oh, how the vinyl market pricing has changed since then!

Didn't they tease a new album back then too? Hmm.

Day 9: Most Valuable

Charli XCX - Number 1 Angel / Pop 2

This one was only officially released as a 2xLP for the two mixtapes as a packaged gatefold. These were available mostly at UO for ~$26 for standard MSRP in 2018, before being briefly available on Amazon/Target and a select few record stores. UO discounted this to $20 at first, and that is when I jumped for it...being a fan of these mixtapes. It was eventually discounted to as low as $5 (!!!) for the length of about a week before they sold out everywhere. Obviously she has more fans now. This pushes $200 often in the aftermarket. I hope this gets a repress for those who want it, but since it sold poorly on initial release prior to the UO discounts, I can understand why this one is on the repress backburner. Both are among the top 5 sounding pop records I have.

Day 9 - Most valuable record

That would actually be this 7": The Nombres "Todos/Trivialities" with a median value of CA$293 and a high of CA$426.

But I played it a few months ago for a similar daily challenge.

So I'll play my most valuable LP:

Madlib "Flight To Brazil" (2010 Madlib Invasion; 2017 VMP exclusive) - median value CA$256 and high CA$317.

Day 9 - Most Valuable.

I sorted by median value and picked the first one that I absolutely love and will never sell.
Roisin Murphy - Roisin Machine

I missed out on this early on. Had it bookmarked but never got around to it before it sold out. I finally just pre-ordered the clear vinyl repress with the pink cover. I didn't think I needed it with Jessie Ware, Dua Lipa, Georgia and The Weeknd hitting similar spots this year, but I do. I mean, I did have "Incapable" on blast for a year and a half. It's a really good record and a totally fun spin.

It has some bops for sure. Some of the tracks cut criminally short, though.

I've seen this one on a ton of year end lists but never heard of it, I'm going to have to check this one out!

If you liked Jessie Ware, 90% chance this'll be your bag.

I slept on the Jessie Ware release. I think the shipping made me pause. I loved her first album but was ambivalent on the next two. The new one is her best yet I think!

Day 9 - Most valuable

This OG Siamese Dream is definitely my most valuable from a sentimental standpoint - it’s the first record I bought and my favorite album in general. It’s also top ten in my most valuable on Discogs for good measure.

Still sounds great, even though I played this on some pretty heinous turntables back in the day.

Yep I ordered that new album but didn’t order Loveless thinking it would get a wider release...and I’m still waiting

Day 7: Cool Story, Bro

Ronnie Scott & Tubby Hayes - The Couriers Of Jazz (Carlton, 1958 First Stereo Pressing)

Playing catchup today. This one has an interesting story to it. There's a building at the end of my street (I can see it from my flat window) which in the 1950's was a jazz venue where the world was introduced to a young Tubby Hayes for the first time. He used to go to the venue (which is really a small hall) and watch others perform. The story goes that he was encouraged to play with the band after letting on that he plays, and they were so blown away that they invited him to join right there. One person that was there jamming with him was....Ronnie Scott. To add more intrigue to the story, this copy comes from the estate of Tony Hall. Hall was a producer and promoter for the likes of Decca, also signing Black Sabbath to Vertigo, producing a Dizzy Reece record for Blue Note, and writing for the NME. He was the first to record Tubby Hayes and the Couriers of Jazz, and this album is just 1 of a handful that he produced. A lot of history in this record!

Day 8: Strangs

The Gloaming ‎– Live at the NCH (Real World Records, 2018 pressing)

I recently found the Gloaming's first album, which I had misfiled and essentially 'lost'. Glad I did as I have been digging into their discography. Heres a live album with plenty of strings!
