December 2020 Challenge Thread: Let's Go Out With A Bang (The return of the raffle!)

Day 9: Most Valuable

Lee Morgan - City Lights (Blue Note, 1957 First Mono Pressing)

Annnnnd im all caught up! I have plenty of albums which might now have a large monetary value, but mean a lot to me. This album is one that ticks both boxes, as its one of my most valuable according to Discogs and its one which I never imagined I would own. I have been building up my Lee Morgan collection for a few years now, he's my favourite musician and I'm very close to completing it. There are a few of his early albums that are like gold dust, rarely popping up for sale and demanding silly money when they do. Early this year I was sent a message by someone that had a copy of City Lights (one of his rarest albums) offering it to me for sale. I almost declined but asked what the price was, and was blown away to see that it was incredibly affordable. I checked with him that it was the correct price and he said it was, so I snapped it up. Its in fantastic shape and sounds superb, easily one of my greatest record purchases.

Day 9 - Most Valuable

I was going to go with my clear copy of Blackstar, which most likely would sell for higher than anything else in my collection. But then when I sorted by highest, I was interested to see this one pop up.

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings - All the Good Times (Are Past & Gone)

Min Median Max
$49.97$162.50$500.00

That seems really high, but I can say the pressing is amazing and I've spun it pretty regularly...it's a beautiful record.

Day 9: Most Valuable

Frank Ocean - Blond

Sometimes having a job where I have to get up super early the day after Thanksgiving pays off
I was (and still am) lukewarm to Blonde but the hype almost caused me to purchase it for around $30 like 2 or 3 times that day. I had it in my basket but never pulled the trigger. It’s one of the few times I regret FOMO not actually winning out.

Day 8: Strangs
What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle? A fiddle has straaanngs. Play something with a string section.

Agnes Obel - Myopia

Her spare, haunting arrangements are generally built around the piano, but cello and violin add beautifully to a good portion of the album.

This one is a new one to me...but it's going straight into the vinyl flat.

In those days (not that long ago), that was a lot for a record, especially when the shipping was pretty nuts, too. (Edit: No, it was just $8). I had second thoughts that morning as well

Day 7: Cool Story, Bro

C A T C H U P!

Kenny Loggins - Return To Pooh Corner

So Kenny Loggins holds a special place in my heart. I listened to him with my dad a lot when he was still alive. Return To Pooh Corner is a childhood staple for me and to this day I love this song. When I heard this was being pressed for Record Store Day I was so overjoyed. One of my college buddies came to stay overnight and we talked in line while waiting to get a number that Record Store Day. It was an early day for the both of us, but we enjoyed it so much and now I hold onto the memories of this album.

Do not sleep on this album. It's mostly kids songs, but his renditions of Rainbow Connection and the Neverland Melody are true gems. Of course stay for the Pooh song as it's a GEM of his. Plus it helps the vinyl itself is so darn pretty!

Day 10: First Day of Hanukkah - Post a record that has Jewish ties

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - It's A Holiday Soul Party

I had to post this record because the first track is 8 Days (Of Hannukah) and three members of the Dap-Kings are Jewish. However my original idea for today was to highlight one of the members of the Dap-Kings and one of my all time favorite drummers, Homer Steinweiss! Anything that Homer has touched is absolute gold to me, and the more I dig, the more tracks I find that he's played on that I love. Obviously he's a member of the Dap-Kings (and other Daptone associated acts) and all of their music is great, but he's also the drummer for Holy Hive and The Arcs, and has played on many albums and songs that I love. The Dap-Kings are all over Amy Winehouse's - Back to Black, an all time favorite of mine, as well as albums from Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson, Michael Buble, St. Vincent and more. Plus he's featured on many songs, including some of pops biggest hits like Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia, Mark Ronson - Uptown Funk!, Bruno Mars - 24K Magic & Locked Out of Heaven, The Jonas Brothers - Sucker, and The Carters - SUMMER. He also plays on Paper Thin, a track from Lianne La Havas' album released this year, which is fantastic. The more I dive into Homer's work, the more I realize he's the drummer behind a lot of my favorites!
