December 2020 Challenge Thread: Let's Go Out With A Bang (The return of the raffle!)

Day 19: Favorite N&G Discovery - Play an N&G AoTM or something else you discovered through this forum

Nicole Atkins - Goodnight Rhonda Lee

It's a tough call because there are so many good ones, but I think Nicole is my favorite N&G AoTM. I listened to this album a ton, was able to see her live shortly after it was announced as the AoTM, and have been listening to Italian Ice a ton this year. Definitely one of my favorite N&G discoveries!

Day 19 - N&G Discovery

It's tough to play a favorite here since I discovered a bunch of great records through the N&G AOTMs and through various posts. I'll just play one I like a lot but that I haven't spun in a while...

Medicine Men - A Different Port

Discovered this record via a Fugazi PIF from @Thackeraye

Didn’t know there was such a thing as Glaswegian Yacht Rock but here it is. Haircut 100 via Vampire Weekend is how I describe it. Not a great record, but would have made a great 5 track mini-lp. But it did lead to me finding out about their label, Last Night From Glasgow and their subscription service.

There was about a million albums I could have chosen, the collective hive mind of this Forum has shined a light on plenty of outstanding music. To that end, I am gonna highlight @MikeH who introduced me to one of the albums I have enjoyed the most over the last 12 months. This album is super chill Lo-fi avant-garde jazz made with some engaging rhythmic samples. Maybe the perfect LP to get you through a long work day. An album that came out a few years prior and sadly I had missed but thanks to N&G and more specifically Mike, I am clicking away on my last work day of this hellish year in utter bliss.

Day 18: Ladies Night!

Definitely one of the holes of my collection are female artists - or even female fronted bands...it's a work in progress, but that is one area of my collection that VMP actually helped with.

Even in my post-VMP life, I've still been getting more releases from females.

Somni - Home

I think I first heard of Somni over in the Electronic thread, when someone shared a previous album, which meant I was already on board and on the Bandcamp mailing list when this one was announced. Solid electronic bedroom chill.

Gonna go with a recent gift from my friend @bshikari. Had never heard this band. It's fantastic...

You should definitely check out other Zamrock bands like the Witch! There's a couple of Now Again! compilations that are a great intro to the genre

Day 19: Favorite N&G Discovery

Gotta go with The Comet Is Coming. This album got hyped quite a bit, and deservedly so. Nothing I would have searched out on my own, but it's a go-to, especially Blood of the Past.

Day 19: Tortoise - TNT

I've discovered lots of great music from this forum, but felt like picking an N&G AOTM would be most appropriate. I don't want to pick a favorite, but this one is pretty high up there. How did I miss this when it came out? So good and the vinyl package is all around excellent.

My New Years resolution is to pick up each of the N&G AOTMs for 2021 and get involved in those threads. I figure as far as resolutions go, that's doable.

Needles & Grooves AoTM /// Vol. 2 - August 2019 /// Khemmis - Hunted

This pick from @Goatfish is pretty much my wheelhouse as far as metal goes - how I didn't know about them still stumps me. Since this AoTM I've gotten about everything I could from their discography.

Julien Baker ‎– Sprained Ankle (6131 Record, 2018 Pressing)

I really enjoy the music of Boygenius and their individual albums, which all came to my attention with Julien Baker's 'Sprained Ankle'. Back in 2018 (when VMP sold non-exclusive records) I picked this up after seeing a lot of chat about it on the old forum. I wasn't really sure what to expect but was blown away by the music when it arrived. I cant get enough now and love all of Baker's and Boygenius' music.

Day 20: Covers! - Play an album with a great cover song or great cover art or that you want to put on when staying under the covers on a lazy Sunday morning

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I

This one is multifaceted for me. This is a classic album cover and probably my favorite of all time. Plus it includes what I'll call "covers" of some great blues classics by Willie Dixon!
