December 2020 Challenge Thread: Let's Go Out With A Bang (The return of the raffle!)

Day 19: Favorite N&G Discovery
Play an N&G AoTM or something else you discovered through this forum

This is a combo item really. I joined Magnolia earlier this year and the first artist I came across who I wasn’t super familiar with was Kathleen Edwards. Certain individuals here were quite excited for her return so I didn’t swap...glad I didn’t.

Day 19: Favourite N&G discovery

Stereolab - Dots and Loops

I was scooped on Tortoise's TNT earlier, but this record is probably tied with that for my favourite discovery from being on this forum. Last fall, I think, when these reissues were coming out, a lot of folks were praising them and I was intrigued. I knew I'd heard Stereolab before but I wasn't sure where. Turned out it was "The Flower Called Nowhere" from this album, which appeared on Badbadnotgood's excellent LateNightTales. The song was great in this context and when I checked out the whole album, I was really happy to find that the rest of the record was also awesome. Very different from any music that I'd really listened to up to that point and I fell really hard for this album. I think eventually, when it's had enough time to stew, this album could be in contention for my top 50 all time if we ever do it again in the future.

Day 20: Covers!
Play an album with a great cover song or great cover art or that you want to put on when staying under the covers on a lazy Sunday morning

Frances Quinlan - Likewise

This album ends with a cover of Built to Spill's "Carry the Zero" that manages the trick of making the song into something new without losing its original charm.

Day 20: Covers!

Ill Considered - An Ill Considered Christmas (Ill Considered Music, 2018 White Label Test Pressing - No. 05/10)

I think of this as a double-whammy as the cover art is fantastic and its a series of Christmas covers. Vincent De Boer is very much the unofficial additional member of Ill Considered and his artwork has adorned each of their releases, making the groups albums instantly recognisable.
