Play something lazy

Guided by Voices was one of the most fun little shows I went to. We went on a road trip to Austin in 2000 to see them play and I got to go to Waterloo too. Bob got soooo freakin drunk, but that just made him want to play more songs. That's the longest concert I ever attended because Bob wouldn't stop. It was delightful.

Day 14 - G.O.A.T.
Play something from someone considered one of the G.O.A.T.s in their field...

What makes Neil a GOAT? Besides everything, its this story by Graham Nash about being invited up to Neil's ranch to hear Harvest.

The man is totally committed to the muse of music. And he’ll do anything for good music. And sometimes it’s very strange. I was at Neil’s ranch one day just south of San Francisco, and he has a beautiful lake with red-wing blackbirds. And he asked me if I wanted to hear his new album, “Harvest.” And I said sure, let’s go into the studio and listen.

Oh, no. That’s not what Neil had in mind. He said get into the rowboat.

I said get into the rowboat? He said, yeah, we’re going to go out into the middle of the lake. Now, I think he’s got a little cassette player with him or a little, you know, early digital format player. So I’m thinking I’m going to wear headphones and listen in the relative peace in the middle of Neil’s lake.

Oh, no. He has his entire house as the left speaker and his entire barn as the right speaker. And I heard “Harvest” coming out of these two incredibly large loud speakers louder than hell. It was unbelievable. Elliot Mazer, who produced Neil, produced “Harvest,” came down to the shore of the lake and he shouted out to Neil: How was that, Neil?

And I swear to god, Neil Young shouted back: More barn!

I mean Bob is a bit of a weirdo, right? It’s funny because based on his DIY Lo-Fi recordings you’d think the might be a bit reserved or insular but when he plays live it’s like he’s the second coming of Mick Jagger playing Wembley Stadium. Such an amazing live band…and the drunker the better for sure!

EXACTLY!! Him being so strange, you would guess that he would ask that people not sing along (like I've seen Ani do) or be very reserved, but no. He made that small venue feel giant. He would just take another swig and tell his bandmates to play another song, just changing the list on the fly.

Day 13: Synthesizer
Play something that prominently features synths

Com Truise - Galactic Melt

Just a man and his keyboards telling the intergalactic saga of the first robot astronaut blasting off into the cosmos and journeying into the depths of the abyss while falling in love with an alien. Run of the mill type stuff.

Day 14 - G.O.A.T.
Play something from someone considered one of the G.O.A.T.s in their field to celebrate Jay-Z’s birthday (it’s off by 10 days, I’m reaching here!)

Miles Davis "Kind Of Blue" (1959 Columbia; 2021 Analogue Productions remaster)
This guy wasn't too badly regarded in his field.

Day 14 - G.O.A.T.

The Roots – Phrenology

I've spent about 25 years thinking about, reading about, discussing and researching the G.O.A.T. emcee question and have had a great many top choices through that time. However over the past few years I feel like I have cemented my "final answer," as I would be hard-pressed to find anyone in the conversation as well-rounded and consistent AND with the longevity of Black Thought. There are many great emcees out there, but to me Black Thought wears the crown as the greatest.

As a bonus, The Roots as a whole are indisputably the G.O.A.T. hip hop band.
