December 2021 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread: ‘Tis The Season Of Giving

Day 15 - Africa
I came across this album while looking for a record to add to my Nina Simone order to make importing from Germany worth it. I listen to any record by a lady that I’m not familiar with already, haha. I freaking fell in love with this. Cesaria Evora is from an island off the west coast of Africa called Cape Verde. She gained world wide recognition in the 1990s, later in life. She is the preeminent singer of the “morna”style of music. This really transports you to a bustling cafe and is just a really lovely listening experience. My favorite discovery of 2021. Check it out if you love the Buena Vista Social Club album especially.

Day 15 - Africa

Saron Gas originally from South Africa changed their name to Seether when they relocated to the US. I would have preferred to play a record by a band from and working on the continent, but this is a real hole in my collection! Gonna have to correct that in 2022.

Day 15 - Africa
Play something from the hottest continent

Monomono / Joni Haastrup "The Dawn of Awareness" (1974 Capitol, original US pressing)
A deeper cut from my African collection. I'd describe this as afrobeat-psych. A consistently solid record from front to back. Reissued by Soundway in 2011.

Back in 2004 Eddie Vedder brought the Walmer High School Choir from Cape Town, South Africa to Seattle and recorded some of their songs. In addition, they recorded some unique versions of classic Pearl Jam songs. The whole thing was put out as "The Molo Sessions", and PJ put Betterman as the B-Side of one of their christmas singles as well.

Who is William Onyeabor?
Forgot I had this record! Wasn't on my discogs but found it on my shelf. Some interesting Nigerian Electro Funk!
