December 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge: The Intergalactic Mixtape Dance-Off!

Day 16 – The Chain
I can still hear you saying, you would never break the chain (Never break the chain).
Play something related to what you played yesterday and tell us how it’s linked.

Yesterday I played Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets.

Nick is both a fine drummer and a racing enthusiast so this seems quite fitting...

I can still hear you saying, you would never break the chain (Never break the chain). - let's link this altogether shall we?

Snoop Doggy Dogg "Doggystyle" - I could have linked Parliament Funkadelic to Dre but why not play the unofficial follow up to The Chronic? This was a hell of a one two punch that really changed the game back in the day and again if I'm in a spaceship I'm bringing my cassettes!

Could have picked any song off either of these, and of course neither album is on Spotify so I'll have to get creative with the mixtape...

Ibibio Sound Machine "Electricity" (2022 Merge)
Wanted to spin this and it so happens I can make the link to Depeche Mode's Violator several ways. First, off Ibibio Sound Machine is a synthpop band like DM, but that's sort of simplistic. But also, there's a song called "Casio (Yak Nda Nda)" and Martin Gore apparently used to write using a Casio. Additionally, there's another called "Truth No Lie" while Violator includes "The Policy Of Truth". I've enjoyed Ibibio Sound Machine prior to this album, but they really nailed their brand of African Synthpop on this one. So much that the album has made its way into my 2022 top 5. Such a fun listen from front to back. I'll include album deep cut "Casio (Yak Nda Nda)" as the next track on the mix, flowing from Enjoy The Silence yesterday. The african lyrics also expand the international feel I've thrown into the mix two days ago with French track "Chambre d'Echo".

Recap:
Day 15 – Lake Shore Drive
And there ain't no road just like it, anywhere I found.
Play some spaceship flying music - what’s on your stereo when you’re cruising around the stars?

Smog - Knock Knock

Smog doesn’t necessarily give off much of an interstellar travel type vibe but it does have a song about being a “Teenage Spaceship” which in one of my faves.

Jim O’Rourke - Eureka

The “Chain” here is that Jim O’Rourke produced Bill Callahan’s (aka Smog) previous record, Red Apple Falls. Also, both artist released their albums (Eureka & Knock Knock) about a month apart in 1999 on the Drag City label.

Ok, hold on for this chain. Born in a UFO is from an ep of outtakes from Bowie’s album The Next Day. One of the singles from the album, The Stars Are Out Tonight featured Tilda Swinton in the video. Tilda starred in the 2022 movie Three Thousand Years of Longing with Idris Elba. Idris starred in the HBO series The Wire which used the Tom Waits song Way Down in the Hole as its theme, performed by different artists each season, including Steve Earle

Steve Earle - Washington Serenade

Nice! The complete 6 degrees of separation! Can you get to Kevin Bacon in less?

EDIT: I can do it in 1 step 😅

Bowie's "Life on Mars" was used on Footloose starring Kevin Bacon

Steve Earle also has a small role on The Wire as Waylon, a recovering heroin addict that helps Bubbles with his own recovery.

Cake covers Willie Nelsons "Sad Songs and Waltzes"on this album. Not going to add that to the mixtape though, too many slow songs in a row. Going to use their cover of "I Will Survive" instead as I can see this being used in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 as Peter deals with Gamora coming back into his life
after a different version of her died
.

And so you're back
From outer space
I just walked in to find you
Here with that look upon your face

Also - Willie Nelson was in the Country Bear movie with Toby Huss, and Toby Huss was in R.I.P.D. with Kevin Bacon - two steps. And Kevin Bacon is in the GOTG holiday special, so everyone but Gamora gets one step, and she gets two.

Guardians of The Galaxy Lego Advent Calendar Interlude!

Day 16 - Peter took out his vintage wooden veneer tape deck and the gang started sharing the awesome mixes they created! All agree that Mantis's psychedelic space jam mix with guitar effect interludes is coming along very nicely! Nebula was feeling peckish and decided to sample Rocket's turkey kablooey recipe. There are only two types of beings in the universe: those who dance and those who do not.

Day 14 – Fox On The Run
You, you talk about just every band, but the names you drop are second-hand (second-hand). I've heard it all before.
Play an artist/album that you seem to be one of the few people that listens to them/it. If you wish, tell us why we should listen too.

@Yer Ol' Uncle D kinda beat me to it, but I think they're wildly underrated outside Australia.
If you like power pop, they should be on your radar.

Hoodoo Gurus - Chariot of the Gods

Yes, I really like this band

Well, since my last post was one of my all time favorite albums, I could probably link it to anything.
So I went with War Pigs / Masters of War as a connection.

Day 11 – O-o-h Child
Ooh child. Things are gonna be easier. Ooh child. Things'll be brighter.
Play something bright, hopeful and/or positive.

Low - HEY WHAT

Mimi's passing will always sting, but we are fortunate she left us so much beauty. One moment that literally took my breath away from their last album comes a couple minutes into the song "All Night" where Mimi's voice shines through the static and lights up the darkness of the song- a perfect sonic embodiment of hope.
