December 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge: The Intergalactic Mixtape Dance-Off!

Day 14 – Fox On The Run
You, you talk about just every band, but the names you drop are second-hand (second-hand). I've heard it all before.
Play an artist/album that you seem to be one of the few people that listens to them/it. If you wish, tell us why we should listen too.

I really enjoy this take on Bobby Gentry's Delta Sweete that Mercury Rev put out a few years ago, covers the whole album + Ode to Billie Joe. Different vocalists on each track - Hope Sandoval, Lucinda Williams, Norah Jones, etc. Very atmospheric and restrained. Was lucky enough to see them tour it right before Covid hit with Beth Orton singing on all songs, probably no more than 40-50 people at the show. Not an album I see mentioned here at all.

Adding Margo Price's version of "Sermon" to the mixtape. Following up Nick Cave was not an easy task, but I think it flows nicely with some dark energy and sets us up for whatever tomorrow brings.

Choses Sauvages "Choses Sauvages II" (2021 Audiogram)
I think I'm pretty much the only one on here that listens to this. Band is from Montreal. If I'd categorize it, I'd say it's electro-funk with a mix of synths, bass, guitar and drums. There's a bit of an 80's bend to the sound (especially the track I selected for the mix, which is very much New Wave), with some airy vocals in French, though many tracks are instrumental. I'm adding "Chambre d'Echo" to the mix to pep it up a bit. The New Wave sounds flow well from Elvis Costello. For fans of the early 80's, New Wave, Duran Duran, etc...

Just love Chuck and his driving singer songwriter action. In that same vein as Alejandro Escovedo and some of the Americana/Rock genre. Fun performer and just a good dude.

Day 13 – Mr. Blue Sky
What’s the weather where you live today? Tell us what it’s like and play something that goes with it.

I know there are a bunch of people on this board who listen to British jazz, so Django Bates is probably familiar to them. I heard him at the Montreal Jazz Fast a several times in the early 90s. He fucking blew me away every time! Anyhoo, Winter Truce (And Homes Blaze) is pretty appropriate for the weather these days. Oh, and I'm putting "New York, New York" on the mixtape.

I've been told Charlie Wilson is pretty popular among older black women; so, as a middle aged white guy, not many of my friends listen to him. He also doesn't appear to be very popular on this board; searching his name on Needles and Grooves revealed very few posts. HOWEVER, this is a travesty because he's a monster of R&B and Funk. Anyhoo, I'm playing "" from this album "Charlie, Last Name Wilson".

Ooh child. Things are gonna be easier. Ooh child. Things'll be brighter.
Play something bright, hopeful and/or positive.

I was ecstatic when I heard this album was being reissued and am very pleased with the results. This album had a couple tracks that are hopeful and positive, “Moment In The Sun” would work for this theme as well but I went with the album closer “No One’s More Happy Than You” the poor grammar aside, when the joyful chorus hits, I still get goosebumps all these years later.

I don't own any of his LP's, but he's on this fine Snoop funk record that I enjoy a lot:

Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why. You had to hide away for so long (so long). Where did we go wrong?

We have 8 hours and 31 minutes of daylight today. I work 10 hours today and those 10 hours will fully envelop those 8 hours and 31 minutes. Also, the low is 28° so “Darkness & Cold” seems like an apt selection.

This was one of those albums that I came across while going through some music publications best albums of 2021 list at the tail end of last year. Had I known about it soon it would likely have have been my album of the year. It’s so brilliant. I would say that it’s underrated but I don’t think it was on enough peoples radars to actually be rated to begin with. I can’t recommend it enough and everyone should give it a listen.

Americana via Leeds, UK

Sally Timms is probably better known as a member of Mekons, and for being Fred Armisen’s wife before Elizabeth Moss. But she is a great musician in her own right, producing several wonderful solo albums.

This one is with fellow Mekon, Jon Langford

My favorite album of the year didn’t seem to make any others’ top lists that I’ve seen. This whole record is an experience and sounds fantastic when played loud, as you can hear each of the instrument’s detailed parts (unfortunately the vinyl pressing doesn’t do it justice; I prefer listening to it in my car). It seemed to be ignored by most, similar to my favorite albums from 2021 (records by Buck Meek and Bowerbirds that were played endlessly), but maybe these albums just hit me at the right time and were more personal because of it. Such a great album going without much recognition made me wonder if the guy said or did something terrible and I never heard about it (this is not actually the case, from what I can tell).

Emotional Oranges
- The Juice, Vol. 1

No one I know personally (or on here) listens to these guys aside from me, which is a shame. If you’re into 90s R&B (or R&B in general), I can’t recommend Emotional Oranges highly enough, this album specifically! They also just dropped Vol. 3 this past Friday btw, y’all should check that out too.
