Day 14: Fox On The Run

Emotional Oranges
- The Juice, Vol. 1

View attachment 161218

No one I know personally (or on here) listens to these guys aside from me, which is a shame. If you’re into 90s R&B (or R&B in general), I can’t recommend Emotional Oranges highly enough, this album specifically! They also just dropped Vol. 3 this past Friday btw, y’all should check that out too.

Oh, I like this song! The synths on there are definitely my speed.

I checked out Vol. 3 at work on Friday! On a single, first listen (of the album and to the artist) it didn't jump out at me as something I would want to immediately run out and buy, but I did enjoy it and will likely check them out again - likely this album (specifically!)

Day 13 – Mr. Blue Sky
Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why. You had to hide away for so long (so long). Where did we go wrong?
What’s the weather where you live today? Tell us what it’s like and play something that goes with it

I'm glad I waited a day to post, we had a rare sighting of the sun today. November and December are generally gloomy around here. Anyway, I like the choice today instead...

You, you talk about just every band, but the names you drop are second-hand (second-hand). I've heard it all before.
Play an artist/album that you seem to be one of the few people that listens to them/it. If you wish, tell us why we should listen too.

Alex The Astronaut - The Theory Of Absolutely Nothing

If you search 'Alex the Astronaut' on this website, you mostly see just me talking to myself. This is one of my favorite and most listened to albums of this decade. It floors me everytime the way she can disguise such heavy content behind such a bubbly voice, and catchy melodies. She's like this decades Beatles.

Aitis Band – Aitis Band III
20221214_213952.jpg

I don't even recall how I came across this one, whether it was a Random Bandcamp Find or the Stupify algorithms, but it was released the first week of this year and the vinyl shipped in April, I think. Since I created the Discogs listing for it immediately upon receipt only 12 other people have added it to their collection, accounting for 13 of the 200 copies pressed.
The only person on the forum I know for sure checked it out (but didn't even make it halfway through) was @Jake!

I don't actually know much about these Chicago weirdos, and I haven't even gone back to check out their first two albums yet, but this one I enjoy inexplicably. The band's own bio is exactly the kind of thing that would draw me in:
Often described as bizarre and unlistenable, AITIS band effortlessly knocks out brilliant & intuitive pop jams best experienced with sound proofing headphones and a tight blindfold.
(like Samhain but quiet)

Thee Shams were fronted by the Gabbard brothers prior to then forming Buffalo Killers. Garagie, retro fun. This is their last record before disbanding.

Kenny Burrell - Have Yourself a Soulful Little Christmas

I had to take the star thing a bit more literally with the cover here, but this is a fabulous album and one of the few jazz records my family can listen to without complaining.

It was pretty rainy in Portland on the day of this prompt. This ambient mini album gives off a cold atmosphere, with many field recordings of rain and evoking young memories.
A transcendently performance last month in Portland. Her gentle voice adorns the ambient backdrops perfectly. I hope to see her again.

Omni Gardens - Moss King

I like this because the folks at Musique Plastique put me on to it, knowing my tastes. Omni Gardens is an ambient electronic project from Steve Rosborough, based here in Portland! Less than 100 own it according to Discogs, but there exist only ~150 in circulation. Highly recommended if you like moog synth electronics (Plantasia especially).

Play some spaceship flying music - what’s on your stereo when you’re cruising around the stars?

Carly Rae Jepsen's song (feat. Rufus Wainwright) "The Loneliest Time" is the best spaceship-flying-song this year, IMHO. Also, maybe I'll flush out any hidden "Jepsies" on the board.

And there ain't no road just like it, anywhere I found.
Play some spaceship flying music - what’s on your stereo when you’re cruising around the stars?

As I've mentioned in a few posts, I lost my dad about a year and a half ago, and this was one of his favorite albums. He was big on trains and travel, and Willie Nelson too. After he passed the cassette was in his car, and I couldn't bring myself to take it out. My mom eventually sold the car (with the cassette in it) to a local mechanic who resold it again. As it turns out, one of my sisters co-workers bought the car and they figured out it was his, and the tape was still there. So it got sent back to me. So in the spirit of intergalactic travel, and Peter Quill's ruminations on parents and family, I'll play this and add City of New Orleans to the playlist. If Peter wants the tape for the Milano, he can have it!

Steve Roach - Structures From Silence

Had a few to pick from here, but sticking with the recent ambient theme I've created with the last two daily prompts.

Depeche Mode "Violator" (1990 Mute; 2019 reissue)
I'm also going with the idea that "In space, nobody hears you scream". So you have to "Enjoy The Silence". A little electronic pop will go well after yesterday's track.

Smog - Knock Knock

Smog doesn’t necessarily give off much of an interstellar travel type vibe but it does have a song about being a “Teenage Spaceship” which in one of my faves.

PXL_20221215_221501293.jpg
Annie Hardy Rules - former lead singer of Giant Drag released this really uplifting solo album that no one seems to want to listen to...oh wait, it's a heartbreaking mess of a record...just reading her wikipedia page I was like wow she's been through it! Written after losing her child and her husband it's not for everyone...kind of would be something you might play floating through space when you want a different vibe...oh wait that's the next post...not sure this makes the final cut but here's a track..

So, check out the Chris Smither song I linked. It's not on this album I posted, because his stuff is rarely if ever pressed. Anyway it's one of my favorite songs by anyone.
He writes and performs with such a warm, confidant wisdom. And he's a fantastic guitar player.

For further listening, stream Live as I'll Ever Be; it's just he and his guitar and some pronounced foot stomps.

PXL_20221216_031605104.jpg

Cruising around space or around my neighborhood I'm doing it in style!! 30 years ago I'd be bumping this and if you get me in a spaceship I'm going to keep bumping this!! Absolute classic that never gets old.. unlike me!

I've never seen that video before but it's probably exactly what I expected..
