December 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge: The Intergalactic Mixtape Dance-Off!

Day 24 – Flash Light
You're getting me, getting me through the night. 'Cause you're my flashlight (flashlight). You're my flashlight (flashlight). You're my flashlight.
Play something festive!

Vince Guaraldi Trio - A Charlie Brown Christmas

Guess I have to roll with ol' reliable here. The only Christmas record I own.

Day 25 – Guardians Inferno
Zardu Hasselfrau, Zardu Hasselfrau, hey.
I declare that Christmas is David Hasselhoff day this year! Play something somehow related to David Hasselhoff. Or play whatever you want. Anything goes.

Erika de Casier - Sensational (signed)

As the prompt states, anything goes.
The production on this is so glamourous, slick, and reminiscent of early 00s R&B. I couldn't deny it (lol) after several revisits late in 2021. The tangible Sade energy is FIERCE. I saw Erika back in late March this year, among the stronger months for concert outings. She was really fun despite a couple of technical hiccups from her microphone + volume fluctuations.

Day 26 – Everybody Have Fun Tonight
Everybody have fun tonight. Everybody Wang Chung tonight.
Play something to Wang Chung to.

Jamie xx - In Colour

If the music makes you want to move, then it's making you wang chung.

Here we go... catch-up time.

Day 23 – Father & Son
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.
Play something old that you enjoy.

Gil Scott-Heron "Pieces of a Man" (1970 Flying Dutchman; 1972 US reissue)
I'm going to go with the idea that if the record predates my birth, I'll consider it "old". Going with "Lady Day & John Coltrane" to follow the previous day's Gorillaz track on the mix.

Day 18 – Southern Nights
Southern nights, have you ever felt a southern night. Free as a breeze, not to mention the trees.
Play something southern (southern part of a country, southern hemisphere, etc…).

Widespread Panic - Live From Austin TX
A southern US band (GA), playing a show in another southern state.

Day 24 – Flash Light
You're getting me, getting me through the night. 'Cause you're my flashlight (flashlight). You're my flashlight (flashlight). You're my flashlight.
Play something festive!

Johnathan Richman & The Modern Lovers "Modern Lovers 88" (1987 Rounder Records; 2022 Craft Reissue)
Not a Christmas record, but a pretty damn fun and festive one. I actually don't own any Christmas records other than the Soul Saints Orchestra "Santa's Got a Big Bag of Soul" 45 already played by @4080 earlier this month. But this album does have a tree on the cover that would look very nice dressed up with some decorations and a star on top. "I Love Hot Nights" is going on the mix because those would feel nice right about now.

Day 25 – Guardians Inferno
Zardu Hasselfrau, Zardu Hasselfrau, hey.
I declare that Christmas is David Hasselhoff day this year! Play something somehow related to David Hasselhoff. Or play whatever you want. Anything goes.

Echo & The Bunnymen "Echo & The Bunnymen" (1987 WEA Japan)
David Hasselhoff covered "Lips Like Sugar" with none other than "A Flock Of Seagulls".

Guardians of The Galaxy Lego Advent Calendar Interlude!

Day 25 - Drax The Destroyer has just joined the gang wearing a Christmas sweater featuring a dancing baby Groot! He's totally honing in on the turkey, spoon and fork in hand. Yes, that's the accessories Lego saw fit to include with Drax, because two knives would not have done the job. Peter has been ready for weeks with his Awesome Mix for the challenge. Mantis was putting on the finishing touches a week ago. But now Rocket is ready to go as well, with an explosive mix of Boom Bap (an onomatopoeia!), and a few surprises, including opening and closing with different versions of Demolition Man (Grace Jones and The Police!). And Groot grew some branches to make everything more festive! Groot didn't bother getting his entry to tape... iphone playlist will have to do (be ready for Plantasia!).

Day 26 – Everybody Have Fun Tonight
Everybody have fun tonight. Everybody Wang Chung tonight. - imagine, Wang Chung-ing on Boxing Day...my word!
PXL_20221227_011614669.jpg
The Rapture "In The Grace of Your Love" - I guess I could totally have fun tonight listening to this record, I might even Wang Chung tonight listening to this record but I'm not sure if that means nothing or something...

This whole record is fantastic! They really need to reissue Echoes!

Almost picked that song!
Some weird covers on that album.

Day 26 – Everybody Have Fun Tonight
Everybody have fun tonight. Everybody Wang Chung tonight.
Play something to Wang Chung to.

Drugdealer "Hiding In Plain Sight" (2022 Mexican Summer)
Wang Chung recorded the theme song for the mid-80's film "To Live And Die In L.A.". The latest Drugdealer release includes the instrumental "To Live And Drive In L.A." I can Wang Chung to this. This short track makes a nice segue into Side 3 of the mixtape.

Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues

I'm taking it that meeting the criterion if one can "Wang Chung" or not to an album is simple: is it new wave/synthpop?
In this case, yes. Talking Heads were indeed new wave, and crossed over into other genres.

Day 27 – Hidden Track
You know the game, and we’re gonna play it.
Play something popular that you never tire of hearing.

Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia

16721338440565256699314002255453.jpg

I had this on multiple times a day in the month it came out of pandemic season; it's one of the records I associate closely with that year because of the sudden release due to an unofficial audio leak + COVID-19 outbreak + impending concert cancellations/reschedulings. She's a worldwide popstar that is as popular as can be. Future Nostalgia is an unconditional bop. Three copies on vinyl on different colors and a deluxe CD are in my possession.
Over two and a half years later, I still love it. I'm a still poptart at heart, something that'll never change. I will likely offload two of the LPs next year to make space, though.
