Day 29 – (I Ran) So Far Away
… And I ran, I ran so far away. I just ran, I ran all night and day. I couldn't get away.
Play some 80’s music. Or play something by an artist with a crazy hairdo.

The Cure – Disintegration

1989 is still the 80's

RSF "Metropol Nights" (2022 Closing The Circle / Private Records)
I'm going to stretch my own prompt a bit and play a record that seems to have gone under the radar this year. I've been playing this on constant rotation over the last month. So this is not an 80's release, but it's fully an 80's record in spirit. The album is designed as a tribute to the iconic Metropol club from West Berlin. Guest spots by Boy George and Andy Bell. A superb cover of John Carpenter's The Fog. Such a blast. Going with Boy George's "Morning Show" for the mix.

Day 29: I Ran (So Far Away)

I Ran” is also featured in the soundtrack of my favourite video game, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, so I decided to go with a song featured in the same game (on the same radio station!)…

ABC - The Lexicon of Love

(both songs are actually played back-to-back, skip to 36:02)

Day 25 – Guardians Inferno
Zardu Hasselfrau, Zardu Hasselfrau, hey.
I declare that Christmas is David Hasselhoff day this year! Play something somehow related to David Hasselhoff. Or play whatever you want. Anything goes.

Kraftwerk - Autobahn

…which once again proves my theory that Germans (and thus Kraftwerk) love David Hasselhoff.

Day 26 – Everybody Have Fun Tonight
Everybody have fun tonight. Everybody Wang Chung tonight.
Play something to Wang Chung to.

Modest Mouse - Good News For People That Love Bad News
A4C176D6-B487-4709-BB80-0FDAF5AC0A55.jpeg
My favorite Wang Chung song is “Dance Hall Days” but I don’t own “Dance Hall Days” on wax. I do own this Modest Mouse album that features the song “Dance Hall” where lead singer Isaac Brock does his best Tom Waits impression while gruffly shouting that he’s gonna “Dance Hall, Dance Hall Every Day!”

Close enough.

Day 28 – (Don’t Fear) The Reaper
Come on, baby (don't fear the reaper). Baby, take my hand (don't fear the reaper). We'll be able to fly (don't fear the reaper). Baby, I'm your man.
Play something heavy.

Motörhead - Ace Of Space
4040A14C-1CEE-43F8-BCF8-021788D43944.jpeg
I had a few things that woulda been heavier but would have messed up the flow of my mixtape…Also, “Ace Of Spades” is probably heavy enough.

Oops, Out of order but maybe that makes it all the more hidden.

Day 27 – Hidden Track
You know the game, and we’re gonna play it.
Play something popular that you never tire of hearing.

Cracker - Kerosene Hat
A779F4C8-6AE7-4C6A-A8AC-F28766E952C9.jpeg

This one was tough, not only are “hidden” tracks mostly product of the CD era (I know there are quite a few unlisted tracks on records too) and seem to be left off a lot of vinyl reissues likely due to space concerns, but even the ones that could be included tend to be goofy throwaway type songs or loud bursts or noise. There are a few exceptions, Nirvana’s “Endless, Nameless” rips for example but mostly you ain’t missing much. That being said, one of the better hidden tracks, one that was actually released as a single, was track #69 (nice!) on Crackers breakout album Kerosene Hat, “Euro-Trash Girl”. Cracker went a bit over the top with the hidden tracks on the album, as “Euro-Trash Girl” was one of 4(!) hidden song on the CD. All were thankfully included on side 4 on the recent MOV reissue.

The Beat - Special Beat Service. (1982)

This was the first 80s album that popped into my head when I read the prompt. Unfortunately, the Beat all seemed to keep it pretty straight with their hairdos.

Was actually going to play this yesterday as “Unconsciously Screaming” is a damn heavy tune. But this is also from 1989. You can keep your Yoshimi’s and giant hamster wheels, and I don’t care what anyone says but 80’s Flaming Lips is their best period.

1982. Contains Don't Change, which ends up on a majority of my playlists / mixtapes. Such a great tune. And the video has Michael Hutchence with his pompadour/mullet combo (pompamullet?)

Excellent choice! Such a great album. Would have loved to have seen them live in this era.

Song: “Closing Time”

This album (and song) was a guilty pleasure but after hearing the story behind “Closing Time” on the Song Exploder podcast a few years ago, it changed the way I hear it

I LOVE the movie Wild Style!!! This is a selection of the breakbeats from the films original score re-edited by Kenny Dope...it's such a cool package and the music still hits with a wave of nostalgia! I'm not old enough to have see this in a theater, shit I doubt it would have played here, but I do remember the 5th generation VHS copy my buddy brought over to the crib in highschool and I remember jumping on the wheels of steel after seeing Grandmaster Flash in that kitchen scene...ah memories! Fun fact one of the main contributors to the soundtrack was Chris Stein from Blondie...
