December Vinyl Spins Challenge

Well shit… I’m out of order. Oh well.

Day 30

Silk Road Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens - American Railroad

There’s really no excuse for this, it’s a fucking CD. There’s no cleaning, no flipping, no need to jump up at the end to make sure it doesn’t destroy the needle due to a wonky center label or dumb runout groove to oblivion.

I think part of it is my own consumption hubris. There is a corresponding podcast that I had every intention of listening to and never got around to, there may even be a PBS thing too? I sort of hit a wall with trying to keep up with too many things just as the political season really heated up. I’ve regrouped over the last few months. Gave myself a break during Christmas Music season and will restart on Wednesday with a few less daily projects.

For those who don’t know… the Silk Road Ensemble was started by Yo-Yo Ma and explored other musics around the world in a more classical minded realm. This is the first release from the group with Giddens as their director. The album is an exploration of America’s complicated history with the railroad. Kind of a perfect subject matter and group for the first project from a classically trained African American who chooses to primarily explore traditional music forms.
