Day 30
Silk Road Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens - American Railroad
There’s really no excuse for this, it’s a fucking CD. There’s no cleaning, no flipping, no need to jump up at the end to make sure it doesn’t destroy the needle due to a wonky center label or dumb runout groove to oblivion.
I think part of it is my own consumption hubris. There is a corresponding podcast that I had every intention of listening to and never got around to, there may even be a PBS thing too? I sort of hit a wall with trying to keep up with too many things just as the political season really heated up. I’ve regrouped over the last few months. Gave myself a break during Christmas Music season and will restart on Wednesday with a few less daily projects.
For those who don’t know… the Silk Road Ensemble was started by Yo-Yo Ma and explored other musics around the world in a more classical minded realm. This is the first release from the group with Giddens as their director. The album is an exploration of America’s complicated history with the railroad. Kind of a perfect subject matter and group for the first project from a classically trained African American who chooses to primarily explore traditional music forms.
Day 21: Driving Home For Christmas
I am literally driving home for Christmas this day. Play me some great upbeat driving music
Chromatics - Kill For Love
It probably depends one when your driving and who you’re traveling with but Chromatics previous album was called “Night Drive” for a reason.
Day 22: Artwork
Play me the album with your favourite sleeve
Mount Eerie - No Flashlight
This is my current favorite because I discovered it’s supposedly the largest album cover of all time. When unfolded it looks like this…
The album is sitting in middle of the unfolded art for perspective.
Day 24: Christmas Eve
Play an album an artist made right before thier masterpiece.
Radiohead - The Bends
This might be a different selection for others since Radiohead has made a few masterpieces but for me it will always be OK Computer but The Bends is no slouch either.
I'm going to ring in the New Year with this aptly named "Chaos, Division, Brink of Doom" IPA with a temperate hopeful spin of "Its Not The End of the World?".
Day 30: Unloved
Play an album that you bought this year but haven't either spun yet or given enough love to if you've spun them all!
Robert Pollard - Not In My Airforce
I’ve had this album in my collection for the past 4 months and it has yet to make its way onto my turntable…until now!
Thanks @Joe Mac for running this month! Been a pleasure hanging out with all of you this year, and thanks to @TenderLovingKiller® for keeping us all in line. Happy new year, and see you on Tatooine.
