Day 4: Train - Play an album to soundtrack an epic train journey

Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison

Johnny Cash LOVED TRAINS! Seriously, he has multiple songs specifically about trains and makes allusions to trains in like every other song. This album opens with “I hear a Train Calling…” and later he performs spry version of “Orange Blossom Special” and I bet there is a handful of other locomotive references through the album.

I have the Blue Train album on CD. It’s a Sun collection of nothing but train songs. I considered busting that out for today’s challenge but went with the joke cause why not?

Day 5: Dads

Today is my Dad's birthday. Play an album for your old fella.

I've told the story enough times that I'll abridge it. Didn't play this yesterday knowing this prompt was coming up today. One of my dads favorite albums and artists. The cassette is the one I took out of his car after he passed. Miss him every day, but thankful of the time and relationship we had.

Happy birthday to your pops @Joe Mac ! i'll raise a glass for him (and mine) tonight.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-la-la Band – Horses In The Sky

The first time I took a train across Canada, a pretty girl made me a mix CD before I left. It had the opening song to this album on it, and I listened to it over and over and over again. A few months later I had the album on CD and listened to it over and over again on a Greyhound across the country. I listened to a lot less music on my second train trip across the country, but this album and the mix CD were damn sure with me. The most vivid memory I have with this album wad once again on a Greyhound the following spring, rolling into Quebec City, I'd fallen asleep with this playing on repeat on my Discman and woke just as we were passing St vincent de paul while "Mountains Made of Steam" played for me and me alone. One of those snapshot memories that has remained strongly with me for 17 years since...

Day 5: Dads

Today is my Dad's birthday. Play an album for your old fella.

Billy Bragg - Workers Playtime

My Dad would have no idea who this is. But he was a union business manager, and a shop steward for a long period before that. How Billy advocates for the worker and common man is how my Father was. I saw him save the job of so many people that I didn't think deserved another chance. He was honest with them and was someone the other side liked to work with because he wouldn't just get them back, he would work with them to be better employees and brothers in the union. I miss this good man every day.

Frank Zappa – Zappa '80 Munich

My Dad isn't a big music guy. He enjoys it; has the radio on all day but doesn't really keep up on albums or artists. He did see Zappa back in the day, though, and even though I wasn't even alive at the time, I'll always be a wee bit jealous of that. So I'm playing some live Zappa for him today.

Happy Birthday Papa Mac!
