December Vinyl Spins Challenge

I can also confirm that the the Italians were absolutely not prepared for the volume of alcohol consumed 😂

Reminds me of a musician friend that came to one of our poetry festivals a few years back to perform accompanying his wife—he came up to me looking absolutely sideways a couple days into the week-long event and was like, "Holy shit, I thought musicians drank a lot – I don't know if I can handle these poetry festivals!" 😂

Four Tet - There Is Love In You

In 2018, I spent a month with viral pericarditis (inflammation of the membrane around the heart). This led to two hospital stays... The connection to this album? There's a song titled "Pablo's Heart," and my name is Paul.

Day 9

Contemplating today’s spin helped me with another ponderance. This record was one of three that are pretty much a toss up for my AOTY. Then thinking about this made me realize that one of the albums was not only one I had given away but the record I had given away the most this year. I’ve already put my money where my mouth (and curation) is.

Spiritualized® - Songs in A&E

This album was released following Jason Pierce's near death experience in 2005, after he had contracted advanced periorbital cellulitis with bilateral pneumonia with rapid deterioration requiring intensive care and c-pap for type 1 respiratory failure. Indeed, the album takes its title from the long period Pierce spent in the Accident and Emergency ward (A&E) during this illness and it is also dedicated to the staff at the Royal London Hospital where he was treated.

Day 10: Gifts II
Share a record that was a wonderful gift that you received.

So pre-covid my Dad was at a garage sale in Cape Cod, and noticed the guy had Grateful Dead barstools for sale. He asked the guy if he had any records, and it turned out he did but he hadn't gotten them out of the basement to sell. My dad ended up buying his collection (100 albums or so for around $150) which included a good variety of 70's / 80's titles and a lot of Dead and Jerry related records that were in great shape.

The original plan was just to bring a few back at a time when we would go to visit or vice versa, but obviously Covid got in the way of that. So my dad (who was a Aerospace Engineer) crafted a giant padded box to put them all in and shipped them across the country to me, which probably cost more than the records themselves. Was a great package to get in the midst of all the restrictions we were under.

Anyway, this is one of those records.

Day 08: Family
Play one for your fam

The National - Alligator
IMG_2586.jpeg

My family unit is me and my SO of 18 years, our two 1 and a half year old sibling kitties, Prince and Trixie, and a sassy 4 year old hedgehog named Heidi. Since the animals care more about treats and pets than music I went with a National album. They are a band what both of us love and one that we have seen multiple times live, in fact we just saw them recently back in October.

Prince - Prince

My SO is pretty hesitant to get me an album as a gift since she never knows what I could already have ordered but when does go out on a limb and gets me an album it’s usually something by a classic artist with a hefty discography. The last one was Prince’s self titled sophomore album.

The Weakerthans – Reconstruction Site

(Hospital Vespers)
Doctors played your dosage like a card-trick
Scrabbled down the hallways yelling "Yahtzee!"
I brought books on Hopper, and the Arctic
Something called "The Politics of Lonely"

A toothbrush and a quick-pick with the plus
You tried not to roll your sunken eyes

And said "Hey can you help me? I can't reach it"
Pointed at the camera in the ceiling
I climbed up, blocked it so they couldn't see
Turned to find you out of bed, and kneeling

Before the nurses came, took you away
I stood there on a chair and watched you pray
