Definitive Audiophile pressings

Yeah I took a shot despite the reviews and it's exactly what all the reviews say, noise throughout the first 45 seconds or so of both sides along with many pops and clicks throughout. The mastering is good but the pressing defects ruin it. I'm kinda at the point where I'm only buying "audiophile" stuff because anything "below" that in terms of quality is just not worth it for how bad most of the pressings are now. And this was apparently Record Industry who are usually quite good. Just a mess. Not to mention charging $45 and using paper sleeves, that's just unconscionable.
Seems like a mixed bag, half say they have clean copies on Discogs

Would you guys happen to know if this is an accurate description? I can't seem to find the pressing on discogs - only see the Kevin Gray ALS that was done for Speakers Corner.

This says "Verve Vital Vinyl Series, from the original tapes mastered by Kevin Gray, Optimal Pressing 180g"
Amazon product ASIN B000003N7F

Well I assume it's the Vital Vinyl not the SC (which is long long OOP). In which case I'd give it a hard pass. Go for the Acoustic Sounds Series version if you can find it

This is the vital vinyl version:

I had a copy of this it was pretty lifeless.

I agree the AS is better but is hardpanned and a bit of an acquired taste. Like it is jarringly panned.

stay away from vital vinyl. they were pretty awful reissues.

i'm with @Lee Newman--the AS is nice, but the panning is really intense on it and a bit distracting to me. I have a few versions of ALS but the AS one gets the least amount of spins even though it's the cleanest version I own (the others are used).

Do any of y'all have the My Morning Jacket Live 2015 3LP set? Just curious how it compares to the sound quality on Okonokos, which I thought was fantastic.

Thought so too but I was wondering why it said Kevin Gray so I thought maybe it was a new cut.

Pretty random but I seemed to have this saved in my quote cache. I had probably intended to reply but got distracted:

Not really sure who cut it. Discogs says:
Lots of the stuff where tapes are in the US (west coast at least), KG has been cutting them. Not sure when he started cutting for them though

There's a woman at Emil Berliner named Sidney Claire Meyer (SCM) who apparently went an spent an extended period with Kevin Gray at his studio and is one of the few people he has trained. She apparently follows the same methods as him and she's doing great work - some examples are the We Release Jazz reissues including the Fukui stuff.

anybody have thoughts/experience with Simply Vinyl? I was at a shop recently that had tons of their stuff and ended up picking up a stereo copy of Blonde on Blonde. I think it sounds quite good but was curious if their titles are hit or miss or more on the reliable side?

I have the White Light/White Heat one. It’s really good and at the time it was pretty much the only non bootleg repress of that album.

interestingly, chad said in a video that came out yesterday that the Steely Dan records will be released as 2x45s once the UHQRs are sold out...so it seems that there may be a "normal" AP release of those titles as well in a year or two.

Took a look at my Discogs. Seems I have a couple reggae records from Simply Vinyl that I picked-up during the early 2000's. I'd say "ok" in terms of mastering. No pressing issues I can recall though. Serviceable, but nothing amazing. But I have a very small sample size to draw from. Looks like they were pressed at Record Industry.

I have this Crowded House record, I recall it sounding quite good

I have a Portishead - Dummy Test Press that's Simply Vinyl and it sounds fantastic. My understanding is that the UK artists on that label are the ones to get as they tried to source tape locally and then overseas artists are usually CD transfers. This is digging deep in my knowledge though, just something I remember hearing from years back!

Interesting. That would make sense. With Blonde on Blonde, the 1st reissue by SV apparently used the UK stereo mix, then it was repressed with a Mark Wilder stereo mix.

I'll scope out some of the UK band reissues on there. Thanks!

I will have to play them back to back to get a good comparison, but Okonokos is one of the best sounding live albums in my collection and the 2015 set is totally fine but didn’t wow me like Okonokos.
Okay that's kinda what I sussed out from the cogs reviews. I have the latest Okonokos pressing and I was blown away by how good it sounded. Was hoping for the same from 2015 but was guessing it wouldn't really compete.

I've heard some Blind Faith and Who pressings by SV that were pretty flat sounding and terrible. Sold them and bought originals a while ago.

So it sounds like he’s holding them hostage. Cool.
Fuckin Chad. He also seems to have gotten more and more aloof in his videos. Can't seem to remember anything anymore. He was trying to list the various formats the Dan records were coming out in and kept repeating himself and missing versions.
