Definitive Audiophile pressings

Stan’s records. They had about 40 MoFis, mostly sealed. Prices were all over the place though. Had just about every Beatles MoFi sealed for $300+ each…REM murmur sealed for $200 I think. Tons of simply vinyl releases and some Sheffield labs. Must have gotten a big audiophile collection in recently.
That's what I thought, interesting place for sure. I vaguely remember seeing that Atom Heart Mother now if I'm remembering correctly.

There's a little place a few blocks away called Dreaming Human. Kind of a strange guy running it but had some decent stuff in the racks, a lot of it unpriced which is usually a bad sign, but I found a few really clean records for less than $10. The other shops were kind of a bust IMO.

Also make sure you hit Cabalar Meat Co!

I’ll check that other shop thanks! And we were planning on going to Cabalar for dinner tonight! Glad to hear it’s good!

I can't compare this to any other versions, but BG did great work on this one.

That's great to hear! We were just talking about this Candid series over in the jazz thread. I'm not quite sure what's going on; many of these titles have been delayed for months. Some copies of the Mingus one are out there, but people on Discogs have reported receiving bad pressings. But if this one sounds good, I'll hold out hope that this series turns out to be quality.

This is the first one I've grabbed, and no complaints other than the inner they used which leaves a filmy residue on the wax. But it's a nice thick slab of wax, perfectly flat, no crackle. I think it's very solid and would roll the dice on another in the series.

For everyone that has the newish KG cut of Marvin Gaye: what’s going on?? Do you have significant distortion on the last track of side D? It kind of seems like tape overload to me since it seeeems to mostly just be on the vocals at certain points. I’ve gone through 5 copies and they all have it, but they also all have repetitive clicking at the end of the first song on side d and I’m sure that is a pressing defect.

Seems very likely that it is a tape issue but I’ve seen a bunch of reviews on Discogs where people are saying that they have flawless copies. No one who has this issue would say that as it’s really jarring when you hear it.

Someone tell me it’s on the tape so I can stop ordering more copies, for the love of god!

I picked up the Joni Mitchell Asylum Records box set from a local shop last week. The music sounds great, with Miles of Aisles as the real revelation for me, primarily because I'd never really listened to this 2LP album before, so never realized what a great live performance it presented. BUT, the copy of Court and Spark I received has definite non-fill issues, in multiple places. I've received a 'replacement' from Amazon (no explanation required, I assume), and the second copy of Court and Spark has just one split-second spit of non-fill on the first track, which is annoying though not necessarily a deal breaker. What I'm wondering is whether anyone got this box with a problem-free pressing of this album. It would be good to know whether persistence might pay off, though it's also true my options are somewhat limited.

Speaking of Lancaster PA, look up Mr. Suit, he has some great prices in his small shop; sadly he's closing at the end of the year after being in business for 15 years. Mike is the owner, really nice guy, give his store some love if you get a chance.

I went there last time I was here. Will try to swing by tomorrow AM before we are off to Philly!

I will check right now.

Welp, I've got good news and bad news.
Good news, those copies of the album are all possibly fine.
Bad news, you may need a new cart or you may need to clean your stylus or you may need to adjust your alignment.

I have no pops at the end of the first track on side D and I also have no distortion on the vocals on the final track. I hear the parts you're likely talking about, where he's really pushing the mic, but it's not distorting. So it sounds like for whatever reason your cart isn't tracking those passages properly.

BUUUT it is GZ so nothing would surprise me.. Maybe I got the one good copy out of a sea of garbage.

Worth checking, but do you have the actual KG cut? Or the one that says KG on the hype sticker but was cut by someone else? I’d guess you have the KG but…I don’t recall any repetitive clicking or distortion either

Here's one I didn't expect. I picked up the 40th anniversary edition of Unknown Pleasures to get a clean player copy. Got it a few months ago. Finally decided to do a few A/B comparisons to check with my original. My original canadian pressing is pretty good but is showing its age and has some pops and clicks here and there. Anyway, I heard this new remaster was pretty good but I didn't think it would be better than my original. Boths ends of the spectrum are better defined on the remaster. Highs are cleaner but not harsh or digital and the basslines contain more detail. It retains the cavernous dread of the original as well. Anyway, I like this remaster a lot. My copy is dead quiet too. Pressed at Optimal.

Oh cool, I've been wondering about that one, I'll just grab a copy.

-heads to cogs-

No I will not...

If you're wondering about New Order, I did own multiple copies of each the first three albums.

Movement - I've had the original canadian cinram pressing, which sounds good, but then got the Quiex pressing that was also going around at the time. That's the one to get I think.

Power Corruption and Lies - I have the recent deluxe box 1/2 speed remaster and an original canadian pressing. The original beats it handily. Not even close. In fact, I like it so much I ended up getting a cleaner copy of the original canadian pressing.

Low-Life - I have both a canadian original and the Rhino remaster. I actually have the 2nd pressing of the Rhino from Optimal, not the 2009 from RTI but I believe the plates are the same. The remaster I believe is better in this case. The original is a bit too shifted towards the highs. The highs are crisp and sound great but it's missing some oomph. The reissue boosts the bass, which I really like. Hooky's work is fantastic on this one and it really deserves to be clearly heard.
