Definitive Audiophile pressings

MD seems to raise prices when MoFis stock is depleted. A local here does the same on RSD- regular prices on RSD. The day after and beyond, prices mirror average price on Discogs. I don’t like it either way, but it’s a classic case of supply and demand.

That’s contrary to the terms and conditions of retailers participating in RSD. I’d be lodging a letter of complaint to the local RSD organiser if I saw a shop mark up a sealed original RSD press after the fact to try and make a quick buck.

With MoFi and MD the more I hear about them on here them the more I think that they’re a terrible company that produces some wonderful products and the less I want to have to do with them.

I’ve purchased both gear and vinyl from them. No issues. Perfect experiences each and every time. As far as “flipper prices” on vinyl, I don’t like it and I won’t pay it. If someone wants something bad enough though....it’s an individual choice. No one has a gun to anyone’s head.

It is but it sends out a terrible signal. It’s one thing on the secondary market but new from the manufacturers website I think that they need calling out rather than blaming the consumer. I find it hard to support companies that act like that more than very occasionally.

There also seems to be a noticeable drop off in their QC and their attitude towards complaints about it judging by some of our fellow forumers experiences of late.

I’ve seen a few examples of this. The most obvious I saw was the Sun Ra - Egypt box set. The RRP was around £70 (that’s what I paid). I saw retailers list it at £100+ with some being closer to £200. This wasn’t on or two either, I saw at least 5.

Id be forwarding links/photos to RSD U.K. with a complaint about that kind of thing. I think there is an allowance for a degree of variance in price because they are individual businesses but gouging is meant to be prohibited and can potentially have them taken off the list.

that's insane. I don't know much about the DCC titles, but would you expect $180 for the Eagles greatest hits?
I will say though, from my limited experience, if you see a DCC title on sale for fairly cheap, pick it up. They are the Kevin Gray/Steve Hoffman series that's all AAA. Harder and harder to find good deals on them. Some of the ones in that lot sell for $200+. But you'd think that trying to sell 58 of them would get you some kind of discount for bulk haha.

But technically it’s not the manufacturer’s website- that would be MoFi. MD is a different entity.

I see and understand your viewpoint and agree for the most part.

LOTS of US stores did this, especially this year with the online sales being allowed. Those John Prine box sets were being sold by quite a few record stores in the US on discogs for $200+ the day after RSD and I think MSRP was $100. and I'm pretty sure that one store near me, Norman Sound and Vision, was actually holding back stock on RSD in the past on RSD and then flipping it a week or two later on discogs for 2-3x the price. It does make me not want to shop at those stores anymore though at the very least.

I mean we all know that MD own MoFi so that’s really splitting hairs. I just think it’s a lazy business practice that prioritises the quick buck over building consumer relationships and a positive brand association.

It averages out to $172 per album (plus very reasonable shipping). Not bad actually. You’ll overpay for some albums (Jethro Tull-Aqualung) and you’ll underpay for others (Eagles- Hotel California.) Also, the test pressing of Wheels of Fire- I’d kill for that. Yes, $10k is a chunk of change, but it’s actually pretty fair overall.

True! But all the numbered ones are numbered 13 😱

Would you risk that karma? 😂

I wonder if he'll sell them piecemeal eventually or at least in smaller batches. Can't really see anybody dropping $10,000 on all of those but we'll see!

I thought about making an offer on the lot if/when he is ready, but once I averaged out my offer per album, it’s not reasonable or fair to the seller.

MD itself is awesome especially for gear. I've had no issues and gotten some great deals especially with open box deals that arrived essentially brand new.

As for MoFi, I still buy some of their products but agree that they are pretty awful on the CS front. I'm still a bit miffed that they won't really do anything about damage unless you bought directly from them. On the one hand, I get it--it would probably be a nightmare to accept returns from all retailers. But on the other hand, I'd try to take care of customers if there's an issue like warped discs or missing items in a $125+ album...

There are a lot of companies who sell their product for considerably less that have way better customer service even if you don't buy directly from them.
