Definitive Audiophile pressings

To all my Canadian friends...Mike from the In Groove mentioned in a recent YouTube video that they’ll be shipping to Canada soon, no idea on rates but might be worth checking out. He also keeps a pretty great list of in print all analog records on his site (though a lot are currently sold out)

I haven’t ordered from there yet but end up watching a lot of their videos. I can’t imagine Mike’s collection...even just watching him go through his favorite pressings of DSOTM was a lot to behold haha.

I have that Television... The 2012 pressing? Mine's very nice even if I'm pretty sure I have the Optimal pressing and not the RTI.
Yea it looks like the 2012. Unsure if it’s the RTI although I’m hoping it is! I think they share the same barcode which is annoying!

I was just looking at mine and I think it's the Optimal because of the runout, an LC number on the label and the barcode sticker on the back.

I don't remember it having the HQ180 sticker on it either (I wasn't saving hype stickers in those days).

Sounds good though.

How is their packaging?
I actually haven’t ordered from them but I imagine they’d do a good job as he’s pretty particular when it comes to his records.

Yes!! He had at least 10-12 pressings out and I’m just adding up the cost in my head.

I imagine if you have a shop like him, you’d get tons in lots and trade ins, etc. I always joke with my fiancée that I’m going to open a record shop and she says it would never work because I’d never sell anything good I got in haha

How was work today honey?

Great, I took in this amazing collection!!

Nice, how much did you sell?

Sell??
The following is a real conversation I had once:

“I took a bunch of records to the record store today and sold them all! Aren’t you proud of me!”

“Woah! Well done! How much did you end up getting?”

“Well they offered me $80 cash...

or $120 in store credit so...

I took the store credit....”

Even just the Jazz Dispensary titles that VMP did are astronomically expensive. The same series from Craft directly was around $20-$25. I think I bought the Joe Henderson - The Elements Jazz Dispensary title (AAA from Craft with a nice jacket) for around $18 new.

i agree, but I would add that the VMP jazz dispensary titles feel and look like more expensive packages than the joe Henderson. ( I might be wrong, I need to dig out the Joe Henderson again)

Still such a massive price difference! But I’m guessing the Joe Henderson didn’t sell well and went on sale for USD$18!? Like, an Analogue Productions pressing like that probably would have originally retailed for USD$29 to begin with!

I was looking at the Music Direct site & did a search on most expensive MoFi vinyl. I was a bit surprised at how many items are still stock where the price has been raised to $150 - £200.

It got me thinking, is this a legal practice in America? As music direct are in effect the manufacturer, would it not be considered as price fixing if they artificially restrict the number of units available for sale & then jack up the price.

I think on the Mofi minute this week, the Toad Hall store owner stated the they (Music Direct & MoFi) had completely sold out of more than 50 copies of the Miles Davis - Jack Johnson track (at $60), now this is showing as in stock at $125. I get that a retailer can set the price they want, but as Music Direct is the manufacturer and entirely in control of how much stock is available, wouldn't this be considered as price fixing?

I don't even know the UK laws, but suspect this more than just bad practice. Perhaps, it's just something I've never seen in the UK but would have thought it might also be a problem in the US. I think I remember Sony getting fined million for price fixing CDs in the 90's.

edit - I notice that they don't do the son the Mofi site

It’s legal. MD and MFSL are different companies under the same corporate umbrella.

MoFi Sound Labs= Records
Music Direct= Retail Store

MoFi sells the records to MD. MD as a retailer can set the price to whatever they want, just like any other retailer.

Yeah but have you not seen the cool colours maaaaaan.

Seriously though, they both sound great but the Henderson cost me £20 on ebay and the VMP Jazz Dispensary's are listed at around £35 for members. Big jump. If I didn't know which was which I think it would be hard to determine the better pressing. VMP definitely bump the price up for exclusives compared to the same labels standard releases, without a question.

The only reason I'm still on board is because as an international these prices are still under the cost of a standard edition most of the time. Plus I have found that they tend to retain their value as well. I sold off a load of exclusives that I just didn't listen to anymore on ebay. Everyone without fail sold for the same or more than I paid for them (which I didn't expect tbh).

I thought that might the case when I noticed MoFi don't do the same through their own branded website.

Legal but very definitely suspect behaviour if you ask me. They must now it's suspect or would be doing the same on Both stores.

Yea. Here the jazz dispensary titles were $25 and ended up going a bit lower. The VMPs are $50 for non members. I used to do the same with VMP titles—I’d buy and if I found that a year later I wasn’t spinning those albums, I’d sell them at least for what I paid or more. Doesn’t seem to be the case anymore since VMP jacked up the prices. I wouldn’t be able to sell those for $50+.

if I was an international customer I’d probably still be a VMP member since as you said it makes sense financially compared to buying records from the US at another retailer. Every once in awhile there’s a title I’d want but mostly not at their prices.
