Definitive Audiophile pressings

I think it might have been a bit of “I’ve done those titles, sometimes twice (or more)and there are a hell of a lot of other titles that need a great reissue as well”
it's more that Joe seemed to not wanna screw over Ron and copy the titles they had already done. Joe agreed to do Blue Train since they got to cut mono + stereo + those extra takes and it was different enough to the MMJs.

True. And MMJ was still around when Tone Poet started, no one was expecting MMJ releases in the Tone Poet line back then, now that they started the BN Classic Series and MMJ is basically kaput people kinda forget about MMJ I guess.
Well...yes and no. MMJ was done when TP started, no having done any new titles for some time but reduced to moving back stock and small run premium priced re-use of older plates.

Joe had been out of MMJ for some time although his name was still used by MMJ.

I think it is more that Joe doesn't want to compete with himself more than anything with MMJ, although he may also feel that he wants to bring interesting new titles to market rather than the boring job of rehashing ones already in the market. And he knew the BNC series would cover MMJ titles anyways.

MMJ was still pressing titles (from old plates) and had a good bit of stock back in 2019 when Tone Poets became a thing. MMJ really didn't sell out most of their stock until 2020-2021 after the big vinyl pandemic boom. There were a few BN80s that were existing MMJs, so it was only natural for them to make the BNC series.

I agree they probably didnt want to make redundant MMJ titles in the Tone Poet series, and Joe didnt want to step on toes. That was probably their main reasoning for "let's make Tone Poets all B-list and shelved/unreleased titles"

When you get a moment, could you update Wikipedia, please?

I would say that by 2019 Music Matters was essentially what Speakers Corner has been for the last year - a defunct label in so far as new titles, but having posession of all the plates for their catalog, repressing for as long as they can for retirement income.

I wouldn't say that TP are a 'B' series. In fact, many TP titles were evaluated for a MM release but rejected - Rambach got burned early by a few less mainstream titles and then got fairly cautious. He also really wanted to stick to the Lion/Wolff period and had little appreciation for later BN.

just arrived this morning...

I may give it a spin before I sleep. But it may not get a listen until tomorrow, as I have to work tonight.

I also made the discogs page for it

How was the shipping box this time?

I dunno what it is with Rhino fulfillment, but without fail, it seems like it takes them over a month to even send me a shipping notice. We'll see how long this one takes....but last time I didn't get The Cars until 5 weeks after ordering and they accidentally sent me the wrong 2nd record with it. Coltrane was 4+ weeks to arrive from purchase date.

Stop Making Sense reissue sounds pretty f’in great! Certainly beats the ‘84 copy I’ve got. Super quiet and flat, too.
yea it sounds awesome! for those wondering, the EU was pressed at Optimal and US was pressed at MRP/GZ I think. This new one has some mixes from the 84 pressing and some from the late 90s pressing I believe. Joe Nino-Hernes did a great job on the cut.

you might be pleased to know that its looking like a deluxe version of Talking Heads 77 is coming out next year apparently... a 3 or 4 disc release including outtakes/rarities and a live show from CBGBs I think in 1977

My guess is yes. But all the etchings match the Discogs entry that says Optimal for pressing. Either way it seems like the consensus is that it is a great pressing.
yea i see @zdkaiser commented on discogs about that. They aren't all an optimal pressing. The dude at Rhino who produced this reissue said US was done at MRP and EU/UK was at Optimal. I assume someone who made the entry doesn't realize there are two different pressings of it.

The guy at Rhino also said that this is likely a one and done pressing unless the reorders for wholesale are so unbelievably good that they would be dumb not to repress it. I did notice that Amazon isn't even selling it anymore--they have apparently completely sold out of their stock in the US.

My only complaints are that the jacket is rubbish and it came in paper inner sleeves which is a bit of a bummer for the price. but it sounds great despite some paper scuffs.

Stores in this area didn’t get many - largest one around (Tunes in Hoboken, you may be familiar) only got 4 copies. Had to go there as I didn’t preorder and only know of one other local that does “day of” new releases.

yea i hate pushing FOMO but this one seems to be OOS everywhere. worth picking up a copy if ya see it in the wild. can't remember the last time amazon removed the buy button on a new release vinyl haha.

I was kind of surprised. I have not been preordering much, but when I went to order this one today after the good reviews I was shocked to not really be able to find it. I’m sure there are some stragglers out there still waiting to be distributed, but had to make a trip over to Tunes and grab it to be safe.

it's great because it means more reissues are likely coming from their catalogue. Rhino has done a nice job with most of their reissues in the past so it'll be interesting to see which records they do aside from 77.

They’re one of my favorite bands of all time, and probably one of the artists I have a lot of in my collection where every single release (OG or reissue) sounds awesome. Even the solo project stuff sounds great - those recent Jerry Harrison and Byrne RSD releases sound phenomenal.
