Definitive Audiophile pressings

the MMJs are better than the BNCs by a pretty wide margin

they just aren't $15,000 better haha. i guess if i just had $17K lying around in my couch cushions, I'd go for it!
I don't have any MMJ titles but I have seen people say the difference to a BNC is very title specific. Some large difference and some not I guess.

the BNCs are great for the price point. the MMJs are like nicer tone poets. the MMJ45s are quite good from the ones i've heard. I've also never spent more than $80 i don't think on any MMJs I have.

The MMJ SRXs are next level though, but of course I don't think Chad is including those in this collection. Those are probably an extra $600 each from Chad.

Having been in on MMJ's since the beginning, I don't agree. Generally, the earliest 45rpm titles with Hoffman involvement are all bettered. Those that were redone by MMJ in 33rpm are IMO much more punchy and tonally accurate.

I spoke with Rambach quite a bit in those early days. Bearing in mind that he could often make things up, he never wanted to go the 45 r oute but felt forced to as it was a hot audiofool trend at the time, nd he was establishing a new brand and needed them to be different. Ditto with Hoffman's involvement - at that time, the Huff name brought his sheeple to the table.

Once he dropped Hoffman, the sonic signature was different, and when the brand was established, he wanted to redo the Hoffman era titles on 33. They are all IMO significantly better.

Then with MMJ it just became about money, wanting to make as much as possible before retirement. The SRX was part of this, there being nothing proprietary or new about the formulation, as it brought much higher margins to already created plates.

In terms of the titles redone on the BNC series, it is indeed title specific, but I have happily disposed of the corresponding MMJ in most cases.

They sound different. Not better or worse, not radically so, but a bit different. A slight turn of one or two knobs does that.

You must have beaten the 45 hate into KG.
On the In Groove video, he stated they are a "pain in the ass" and not worth the hassle for some marginal sonic listening improvement. He was speaking generally and not MMJ specifically.

haha i prefer the 33s over the 45s for the same kinda reasoning KG says.

@RHANDMJ i should have specified that the MMJs I have sound better than some of the corresponding BNCs...shouldn't have generalized. I'm sure it's title specific. And wasn't specifically 45s--i like the 33s better too. I can totally see why people have sold their MMJs after the BNCs came out. if I was buying them all today at current prices, I'd go BNC too for the price. You can probably get 5 or 6 BNCs for the price of one MMJ. it's also why I don't really seek out any old stereo Blue Notes now unless they are a really great price. They'll all get reissued by BN at some point. Not sure if we'll see a full mono reissue campaign anytime soon so I still seek those out from time to time...

Rambach/MMJ hated 45 too. It was a fad at a certain point in time, that's all.

it's always funny seeing single sided 45RPM box sets now from that era.
At least you can use a vinyl stacker with these

Using Empyrean Isles as a recent example.
The BNC is absolutely amazing. Maybe it can sound better but that is in the fly poop of a pepper flake.
