Definitive Audiophile pressings

I'm sure most of you are aware that this one is good but I grabbed the RSD Kind Of Blue and while my copy is scratched to hell on side two because God hates me I will say that it sounds fantastic on side one. Amazing pressing and mastering for like... $20. It kills my MOV, no big surprise there. But if you don't have the Mofi I'd say this is a great alternative.

I believe there are two issues of this one--the RSD numbered and then just a non-numbered version right? I have heard really good things about it.

As far as I know they are identical beyond the numbering. But yes that's the ones. Spectacular sound BUT... mono. I personally prefer stereo in general because mono doesn't have the wide staging that I enjoy from stereo. Pretty much all the music on this one is coming from between my speakers as a result. If possible I'd rather stereo for the wider soundstage, but man it sounds good nonetheless. I currently have the MOV 2 LP and this kills it (no great surprise there).

All right Jazz folks, as crazy as it sounds, I have yet to add any Herbie Hancock to the collection.............I'm truly sorry. So I'm looking at these albums to start with, any pressing to look out for?
Maiden Voyage
Head Hunters
Empyrean Isles

AP Head Hunters 33 is great. BN classic will release Maiden Voyage later this year. I have a BN 75 of EI that will need an upgrade at some point.
Edit: you can add BN80 Takin’ Off to your list.

Head Hunter's you want the AP 33 or 45 but honestly you don't need the 45, the 33 is one of my show pieces, it's incredible. The other two are tough, no good recent reissues of either of those. Though I think Maiden Voyage is getting a Blue Note Classics release in July of this year.

EDIT - Beaten to the punch on all fronts...

Maiden Voyage is a warhorse I suppose, but essential. So is Speak Like A Child - I have a fabulous sounding Toshiba pressing.

Empyrean Isles is good, but not one I turn to often. A bit out.

The AP Headhunters is great. 33 is the way to go. BUT - there are better from this period. Flood, on Speakers Corner, is amazing. So is Man-Child.

Taking Off,with Dexter Gordon, I would get before Empyrean, and the BN80 is great.

So many others. There are several Herbie albums done in Japan that are readily avialable and very good.

Yea...I think I would prefer a stereo as well. I have two copies of KOB (the MoFi and an older press that I'll probably sell now) and both are stereo so I have only really listened to it in that format!

Actually, speaking of the Blue Note Classics series. There are several coming up that I'd like to get to replace dodgy 75 series presses, is there a general consensus on these? I've seen a few comments here and there regarding a couple of them but, nothing definitive... thoughts?

I'm going to start streaming some of these, much like Coltrane, I love his work, but I could never get into Ascension and I feel in Jazz there are a lot of those more acclaimed, yet experimental albums that might fall short for an above average fan :)

When I was debating the VMP Herbie box I played The Piano for the first time and loved it. I still stream it at least once a week so may be worth a look. Also love the Trio album that Get Down released at the last RSD and I'm sure there are tons of copies kicking about.

this is a bit worrying. I ordered this for $50 last Weekend, but Acoustic Sounds put the order on hold, with a comment adjusting order.

I also ordered a Dylan Mono mofi, which is now showing as back ordered on the listing (I doubt they will get it back in stock).

It is important to remember that just because “every company is doing it” it is still wrong, unethical, and sleazy business practice. Shows major disrespect for your customer base.

It was only a few years ago all these companies were just hanging on. A few companies specializing in vinyl marketed to and supported by a relatively small group of people who still wanted vinyl.

Edit: not “every company”. Still a # of solid companies selling vinyl. I’d name a few but they might let me down next week.

I received a few (Shorter, Morgan, Tyner) and they’re all great so far. I have Somethin’ Else on preorder.

Looks like MoFi put a few Run DMC on their site and promptly sold them out between the time I went to bed and checked my morning email.

I think they sold out within minutes. I bet more will become available and still will be available at some other retailers. The flipping game on MoFi is even more insane now. Copies are up on ebay for $150+

I echo the comments most have said here already. Herbie has reinvented himself/played so many different styles over the years that you may love one period of his music and hate another. I personally love a lot of the fusion stuff and agree with @RHANDMJ that Flood and Man-Child are both amazing. I love Head Hunters too and the AP is really worth the money. It sounds amazing. I believe it goes in and out of stock a lot so just don't pay crazy amounts for it if it's not in stock at the moment obviously. It's not OOP.

You're getting into him at a good time since there's a pretty big resurgence in his work over the past few years and lots of great pressings are coming out. Can't go wrong with any of the Speakers Corners pressings, or the BN80/Classics.

Those Flood and Man Child SC pressings are hard to come by up here. I've looked in the past and the only place I could find either in Canada was Flood at @RHANDMJ's favorite store (kidding), Diamond Groove... for $95. And ManChild I drew a big zero...

Quick note on the AP Head Hunters... the 2x45 seems to be going for a little less than (or at least at very similar prices to) the 33 right now (likely because it's been repressed).

This is one I've been keeping an eye on but haven't pulled the trigger (since I already have a mediocre copy and should concentrate on records I don't have at all, but then again when does that stop us really?).
