Definitive Audiophile pressings

Just got the Mothership - Zeppelin box. I can safely say....I've never seen a box set packed this way. Opened it up and there's bubblewrap inside the box. Then 4 empty sleeves. Underneath that, more bubble wrap and all 4 albums in poly sleeves. Everything is pretty immaculate on the inside too. No splits or anything because of how nicely it was packed inside the sealed box.

It's, as suspected, the pressing from RTI redone from the digital masters.

Two questions on joy Division/ New Order
  1. Does anyone have a recommendation on which Joy Division's (Unknown, Closer) are the right pressings?
  2. I've got the Temptation 12" (flipside, Hurt) and the sound is good (2019/2020). Does anyone know if the original factory EP or Singles are a better sound quality? It is a moderately meaningful record for me, etc
What do you mean by right pressings? I guess original U.K. pressings of Unknown and Closer are the best but Unknown is unaffordable. The original Porky cut of Unknown Pleasures goes for a lot of money nowadays. I have the original Closer and it sounds better than the reissues to me at least. I also have Transmission, Love Will Tear Us Apart, and Ceremony original UK 12” singles, and they are definitely awesome sounding. By far the best sounding versions of all of those songs I’ve ever heard, the kind of records that give you chills it sounds so good ha! They’re cut super loud too. I’m always meaning to pick up more of the New Order singles but if you can find one for around $20 or less then go for it.

The regularly available JD pressings are great.

This is awesome detail. Thanks

I have a 1968 original pressing of Yusuf Lateef’s The Blue Yusuf Lateef that I pulled off the shelf when someone here (or on another thread) mentioned the album within the past day or so. Gave it a deep vacuum cleaning today and I’m playing it now. Damned if it doesn’t sound as good as some of the better current jazz represses. Some great tenor blowing on Side 2 and an overall strong album. Score 1 for the old stuff (and vacuum cleaning)! 😜

I think you know who cut the Speakers Corner repress of this one 😉

UK folks! Don;t shoot the messenger if this isn't the case (and the price changed back within an hour when this happened last week) But Amazon UK has the Double Hendrix in Miami for £16.23. The manufacturers ref on the site seems to indicate it's the 200gm 2013 QRP version too

Amazon product ASIN B00F031WKE
As I say. It stayed that price for an hour when I saw this last week so I didn't grab at the time so I can't absolutely say it's the QRP numbered version \/

Yep—Camelcamelcamel has it listed as the QRP version so I think you’re right!

This is something that I'm always wary about. When it comes to jazz specifically there are very few reissues that I have heard that significantly tops the initial pressings (those that I can compare with anyway). When you factor in costs I understand that a lot of reissues are cheaper, but in some cases thats not true. Its certainly a balancing act.

I paced on order, just because I think it's the first UK deal I've seen in time to place an order.

It's bound to be the EU MOV version, but the listing looks like it's QRP has the same ASIN & weight (when you convert to grammes) as the US listing. But I have had difficulty with Amazon listings in the past. If it's not 200g QRP goodness, I'm blaming you :)

I know.. I know. Sorry mate. Its still a decent price for a mint set though

I've listened to it a few times already and it gets better every time :)
....which also opens that can of worms, regardless of which side of the fence you sit on, was this a "digital" One-Step? I'm not entirely sure honestly, what's been explained seems a bit grey to me still, although I stopped digging for info a long time ago, sometimes the digital process isn't as cut and dry as we may think. That being said, I find no flaws with this pressing, it sounds magnificent to me and would be the poster child for digital done right, if that truly is the case.

Well...?? How is it??
In my opinion it's brilliant, I have an RL OG and it cuts away enough of the slight brightness and presents everything in a deeper fashion. I think most would be more than happy with an OG, but I think the OS is much better sounding given the production involved in this recording.

Glad you're enjoying it! I have heard awesome things about that one.
