Definitive Audiophile pressings

I'd agree but with the caveat that I think that there is a noticeable difference from the 45s to the 33s. But there is very little between the 33s for sure. What I will say is that mofi 33s are not significantly more than the $33 for an add on VMP track or the $49-52 I’d have to pay for my main VMP track as an internationals. The 1LP MoFi 33 ones are like $35?

Yah. My goal without a vmp account this year is to budget that money for a mofi every month or two. Focus on higher end stuff I want and less randomness.

Yeah exactly plus you get to pick the album you want and not just get whatever shit storf needs to complete some collection or other. Plus not having that damn book has to be a positive! I’m not saying I’ll never buy anything off them (they still think I’m a member for pricing/free shipping of exclusives 🙄) but I can’t ever see myself subscribing to them again.

..... I think I need a dedicated listening room and at least $5k or closer to $10k in a system before these kinds of prices seem worth it to me when there is still so much out there I don't have! Some day.
This is a great point. I assume that most who are willing to spend like this for incremental improvements in sound are relatively happy with the quality of their playback systems. Otherwise, as you suggest, it wouldn't make much sense.

Yes and no.

I am "okay" with my current setup (particularly after getting the Grado Gold 3) but definitely have my eye on upgrades. Just a certain level of marital harmony won't allow those to occur right now.

What I do want to do is get albums I know I will want on audiophile pressings so I can build my library without worrying about after market prices. I have three one-steps: Dylan, Gaye, and Mingus along with an assortment of MoFis and APs. My system is to the point where I definitely can tell a difference between the audiophile pressings and most common ones.

Yeah, as I was typing my thought about being "relatively happy" with one's system, I was simultaneously wondering whether anyone ever could be completely satisfied to the point where there is no thought of "something better." I know I couldn't count myself among them :D. Your point about building a library makes good sense, especially given the current topic of high-priced vinyl that appreciates quickly (for buyers, anyway). And if you're playing this library, as long as the turntable, cart and stylus are of reasonable quality and set-up well, your listening future is bright! 🍻

To be fair VMP’s prices are so out of kilter with reality that using them to defend other companies over pricing, even mofi, isn’t really a fair cop.

I do have the previous desire, which I assume is the same master? It’s pretty damn good, but $75 is a lotta lotta money.
The previous MoFi Desire is fantastic. I'm not entirely sure what they could do to improve on it enough for me to shell out another £100 on an upgrade. Blood on the Tracks was justifiable for the 33 to 45 jump and all that entails but honestly. I can see me shelling out for this and not being able to tell the difference between the two.

I don’t think there is a difference worth the jump to be honest. It was already at 45 and there isn’t the one step difference of less steps in the stamper making process. While it’s probably a quieter press using this super vinyl stuff the previous one, I have it too, it is hardly noisy. I’m treating this an opportunity for 1,000 more people to get this great pressing rather than a possible upgrade.

Yeah. Nice to have, not worth the cash. If they do Blonde on Blonde though

Ouch that 3LP standard 45 box cost a fortune as it was. I’d hate to see what a super vinyl or a one step would cost...

I think that was the only one of the early releases that MoFI didn’t get to do the proper mono release for too, it’s only in stereo.

I bought it twice too! When my house purchase almost went belly up I had to raise some quick unexpected capital so it was in the big hitter pile I sold to get where I needed to be. I spent a year trying to track it back down again and paid about a third more than I had to start with.

If a one step does come out that could take my spending to £450 on Mofi Blonde on blondes alone

I believe the last Blonde on Blonde MoFi is still available for backorder from Music Direct’s site. At least it was a few weeks ago. I have one on order and have been told that they will eventually fulfill it, just might not be for awhile.

Cost a fortune by the time you factor in international shipping and customs. Just not worth it to buy from them from over here.

While we are discussing Dylan Mofi’s for those that have heard both, what are your thoughts on the Nashville Skyline and John Wesley Harding(stereo) pressings. Obviously the music is one thing but pressing wise, is one better than the other?

The general consensus on the SHF seems to be that Stereo is the way to go for all Dylan albums from Bringing It All Back Home and onward. (Mofi pressings specifically) Peeps here agree or disagree?

My gut tells me that @Joe Mac is the guy to ask on this one. I don't have either of those MoFis specifically.

I’m afraid I go off the artist intention so I’ve only ever owned up to John Wesley Harding on mono. That’s the mix Dylan was involved in, not fussed with what engineers did in 2 channel later. I’d rather do a lot of unpleasant things to myself that consider even peering into the warped world of SHF. I only have MoFi for Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited (the rest are MOV or Sundazed) and they sound fantastic!

I've the stereo. At the point I bought them the Mono didn't exist. The bastards released it a few years later and I've not heard it. But the stereo is great if a little sacrilege

I have Nashville Skyline on MoFi and it sounds great. I have the mono box set, so that's where my copy of John Wesley Harding resides.
