Definitive Audiophile pressings

Still pissed about the MBV rollout. If Domino doesn't have the rights to sell their first 2 records in the US, who does? And why don't they? And yeah, the whole deluxe having a diffrent mastering source than the original is such crockshit, it's like Kevin Shields really wants you to jump through the most possible hoops. It's really really really bad.
I have a copy of the deluxe on order from some shop in Sweden, hope it gets to me.
Think Sony owns the US rights to the Creation Records catalog.

Think Sony owns the US rights to the Creation Records catalog.

Sony was their worldwide distributor and owned a decent chunk of the label. I think they bought the bones of the label once McGee got bored and blew it up. They certainly signed a number of the bands at the time (SFA and Primal Scream come immediately to mind). That said others notably weren’t on Sony. Oasis, for example, set up their own label with Sony distributing outside U.K. & Ireland and maybe rest of Europe too, not sure.

huh. Music on Vinyl's been able to distribute several Creation bands off the top of my head, and they're becoming pretty prevalent. Wonder whats the holdup.

Music on Vinyl are based in the Netherlands and seem to have a pretty strong relationship with Sony, they press a lot of their stuff.

I think the issue here is that Kevin Shields owns to the tapes and the U.K. and Ireland distribution but Sony has the US distribution rights and he’s not going to go out of his way to release stuff full stop, nevermind jumping through Sony hoops to do so!

Nope. It was recorded to tape but converted to digital before mastering. The era of the CD! The 2018 was the first AAA press, this is the second.
Damn. So what's the verdict on sound? I'm curious to know how the AAA pressing compares to the original. (Did a quick google search but nothing relevant jumped out, and pretty much all of the 'reviews' on discogs are complaining about how hard it is to score a copy of the AAA pressing.)

That's fine and all for the EU fanbase but him forgoing that relationship screws the NA/SA market.

Like whats the deal man.

It’s exceptional. Dynamic and detailed. The vinyl is silent too. The squall sounds awesome! It is pressed the opposite of hot, you really need to crank it but when you do you’re confronted by a dynamic wall of magnificence!

Edit: I don’t have an OG to compare against.

Hahaha! I think people have been saying that about Kevin Shields since about 1989!

Honestly comes off as not that interested in the act of releasing music, much more the act of making and refining it. He was sued by the label who signed him after creation because his contract with them expired without him delivering an album to them!

It took his wife pushing and at least 5 years of promises while he fawned over masters before the 2018 self released came out.

Supposedly this one came out because his young nieces and nephews kept pestering him about being an obtuse old man for not having wider releases and not being on streaming so they could share it with their friends.

All that considered I’d say he’d run a mile when confronted by the Sony corporate machine.

Yeah, you're right, just seems to be part of the person. He should really consider selling his back catalog so others can handle all that sort of stuff, his family/friends will have easy access and stop pestering him, and he can just retire with a boatload of cash and spend the next 20 years making the next record.

Honestly the ideal would be if there was no fucking Sony at all and he could just licence the worldwide distribution to a bigger indie like Domino who will release his stuff exactly as he wants, even if costs a few € extra to buy in the end. But Sony is going to be Sony and mad reclusive control freak musician is going to be that!

If you've thought about the Gil Evans "Out of the Cool" by Acoustic Sounds (Verve/UME series), I cannot recommend it highly enough, and it's still in stock.

Some of the modern audiophile reissues are a little thin to my ears (Dexter Gordon "One Flight Up" comes to mind, although, it generally sounds very nice and quiet). This is a different deal. Lush, full, but with clear presentation, dynamic range and precise, spacious soundstage. Oh, and the music's great, too.

Seconded on Out Of The Cool. The new Acoustic Sounds 33 sounds better than any pressing I’ve heard, including the AP 45!

One Flight Up is awesome though , perhaps the best sounding Tone Poet so far IMO. Highly recommended

So are we gonna be getting shipping notices for that Kind if Blue UHQR here on May 21st? I live 4 hours from Salina, Kansas and Acoustic Sounds, so my orders usually arrive next day. Hoping to be spinning that Miles this Saturday! Ha ha.

Edit: just checked the website, no May 21 release date listed anymore. Now say "TBA". Maybe that just means they sold the first 6000 copies and are pressing more?

That would be my guess. I think that TBA appeared recently, so should be for current and future orders.

AS charged my card earlier today, so I am expecting a shipping confirmation any time soon. So excited for this that I am considering an upgrade to my setup.

So the original 1991 pressing doesn't have an anaolg source?

@Joe Mac will know more than me about the pressing (it's 30 years since I read around this), but I don't agree that the listing linked to is the first pressing. My copy (bought in the week of release was a different 'Townhouse' pressing. (I've updated the listing on cogs)

I would think the vinyl didn't sell well, I wouldn't be surprised if they sold more cassette tapes. I don't understand why there are both MPO & a Townhouse pressings, & if the MPO was for the European market, or if it was mastered differently.

I'm a 100% positive the new AAA cut will sound a lot better, but I've recently got some L'art du son vinyl cleaner, so will give it a thorough clean and rinse and compare to the new one (if I get it). I expect the new one to sound much better, be interesting to see if we lose any of the 'mix'.

edit - corrected some horrendous autocorrect typos

I got a notice from AS that my CC didn't go through because I moved and changed my billing address. But I called them and it got squared away easily. So it seems like they are shipping and sold out of the first 6,000.

Not super related to this, but I think AS has changed their backorder policy and you can no longer "backorder" any non-AP products. You can just set up to get a notification.
