Definitive Audiophile pressings

I was right on the cusp when it comes to BN and Impulse. I started buying up a bunch of those right before prices skyrocketed. I frequented eBay a lot. Now it's VERY hard to find good deals on things anywhere it seems.
I am lucky enough to live in an area that has a weekly flea market where I can dig for 3-4 hours every Saturday morning. This seems to be the last good place to find those true deals. As far as jazz, just this year I've found VG/VG+ first pressings of Kenny Dorham's Una Mas, Chet Baker Sings and It Could Happen to You all for $1, along with a lot of Coltrane, some Miles and some other 60s BN titles. For most other stuff, I come across classic titles/artist all the time for $1-3 that are worth $20-50, or sometimes even more, in a shop. This is where I get most of my enjoyment vinyl "shopping" these days aside from the occasional eBay find.

I notice you haven't told us where that is.... Hahaha! Sounds awesome.

So you can buy this "lightly" damaged box copy of KOB for $150 from Acoustic Sounds or you can preorder it for $100 from... Acoustic Sounds?

I just paid AS Discogs $85 (incl shipping) for a copy of this with a "one inch dent" in the top left corner, with vinyl described as "LP is beautiful and play graded as close to near mint." Comes with all inserts.

I'm sure some people would not want this copy for $85 or maybe even any price, but I don't care about a dent on a box for an item that I'll never sell. I just cancelled my backorder for a new copy @ $100 + $13 shipping (so $28 more than I paid today).

Good for you! I was going to post a link to that here when I saw it, then figured it probably would be gone before I did! Glad you got it because I think it's a good deal. I thought about jumping on it and canceling my order (which is backordered), but figured I'd leave well enough alone. I applaud your decisiveness!!

Do they ship to Australia ?

Nice, sounds like a much better deal to me

I've learned the hard way that it pays to be decisive on AS Discogs when something good comes up. I posted somewhere above about how weird their pricing is. Sometimes a cosmetic issue yields a nice discount, and other times none at all, with no rhyme/reason that I can figure out.

And their customer service on Discogs is top notch (same for retail), with no hassle returns when something is wrong or an offer of a 50% refund if you're willing to keep it.

I'll ask this week 😂 99% of sellers are people who've bought large collections and want to sell them quickly in bulk deals. Sometimes I feel guilty paying so little for some stuff but hey - you gotta do your homework.
This used to be what I could do at a flea market in NYC. Guy sold everything for $1. I got a mono copy of A Love Supreme for $1 from him in VG+ condition…but then he just stopped showing up. Wish I could find those kinds of deals still. I don’t even have a local anymore now that I’ve moved sadly!

I think I ended up paying $25 for my MoFi Jack Johnson from them because it has a small scratch on it. They were extremely fast to issue a partial refund and just asked for a picture.

@jamieanderson1968 or anyone else, what are your thoughts on the sound quality of the "Bowie at the Beeb" box?
It was pressed at Optimal and the vinyl is nice and flat and quiet. Pressing wise it is good, BUT

I would bet my life that it is digital sourced. The cd first came out in 2000 and I suspect it has been the source for the vinyl as well. Since it is all radio shows from different times the sound quality varies greatly. Some were recorded over the air, a few are from private collections of people involved in the sessions. At least one session was recorded live in the studio as the radio show was being recorded.

You can put a turd in a nice clam shell box but you still cannot polish it. Really for completists only.

But if NightMather wrote the initial post, then congratulations you have 5 sealed sets on their way to your house.

Hahaha thanks that's great info. No it wasn't NIGHTMather despite the time. I was debating it or the Ziggy motion picture live album. But wasn't sure if either sounded good.

Just a heads-up that what appears to be the 2011 OJC Waltz for Debby has begun popping up at the usual sites (deep discount, Amazon, popmarket), and I could swear these were non-existent last time I checked. Never can be sure, but the info in the listings suggests it's this one: Bill Evans Trio – Waltz For Debby (2011, Vinyl)
I'll add, the previous OJC reissue of Waltz for Debbie was pressed at RTI and uses the typically RTI polysleeve. Not sure if this repress will be the same, but worth noting.

Also, this OJC pressing is one of best sounding records in my collection. I have no way to determine if it's truly AAA, but it does sound excellent. Well worth the $20, or whatever they are charging for it.

Ziggy is no great shakes either. RCA professionally recorded the concert so it is not the folio from the Pennebaker film.

I know the original vinyl from 1983 has several songs edited for time (Width of a Circle and a few others). I can't check discogs right now to compare the 2016 vinyl to the 2003 CD which restored the songs to their full length. Width was trimmed by about 5min.

Oh interesting, so it's not actually the audio from the final Ziggy concert? They re recorded it and faked the live stuff?

from memory the edits were done to the LP version for length and then restored to the CD version (maybe not all CD versions? don't know about the latter LP repressings). they did a bunch of overdubs to the live material which visconti called salvage work because the recorded material wasn't that great.
