Definitive Audiophile pressings

APs RE of Gil Evans Out of the Cool is available and great. I'm not an expert on big band by any means but I've been listening to the hell out of it. Would this evening be considered "big band"? It has a lot of instruments (ie an orchestra) but is there a more indicative sound?
I'm no expert, but I personally would not refer to Out of the Cool as "big band," even though there are many band members playing at once on the album. I think of "big band" as both the number of musicians and a style of music, and as I've written here or another thread, Out of the Cool is, in fact, "out."

I absolutely love the album, but that caveat applies. My grandfather was an AM radio jazz DJ who played a lot of big-band (talking 1970s here), and I doubt he played Out of the Cool.

Right. That's why I said that - trying not to confuse the name with the sound. Well, I stand by it being a great album. But as a genre, it would be outside my ken of expertise (if I can claim to have any anywhere - I dunno, when we get back on Prince I can flex some music muscle). I guess a case of connotation vs denotation as far as the name. Excited to see more responses so I, too, can get some lessons and check out some music.

Thanks everyone, I have out of the cool and genius+soul and they are great. They are what have me thinking about more big band stuff. I also have masterpieces, but I’ll look for Sinatra at the sands. I’ll see what I can find with the swing series in your photo, they look amazing. With all of these reissues I was hoping to see some Goodman, Dorsey, Miller, Ellington releases. My grandfather actually fronted his own big band in the 20’s and 30’s. Unfortunately all we have are some old photos and hype sheets.

Out of the Cool is definitely a great place to start! Duke Ellington’s Masterpieces AP press is bone chilling good sonically, Sinatra at the Sands is amazing if you like your Big Band with a little bit of Sinatra. I would honestly find a couple of these, all the big band you will ever need and they sound wonderful and can be grabbed for cheap.View attachment 103630
I loved Glenn Miller's set at Woodstock.

Hum, I guess I have a Glenn Miller Orchestra "In the Mood" that I could PIF if anybody is interested. I would need to play it to be sure how it sounds.

Wondering if anyone has any recommendation for some good big band records. It’s one category in my collection that I’m lacking. Thanks!
Clarke-Boland Big Band - some are reissued in AAA MPS sound - fantastic.

Crate digging - Thad Jones -Mel Lewis Big Band (one has been reissued on Pure Pleasure.

These are the two best big bands operating in the 70's.

Count Basie has some great records

It's a bit weird as it also says Mastered at Sterling Sound by Greg Calbi on the VMP site, but obviously it's not and its a BG cut, plated at RTI.

I'm definitely not complaining, just interested in how my records are made. I think I have some Furnace ones, but not entirely sure.
Someone on reddit reached out to VMP about this. It was plated at RTI and pressed at Furnace (or so they say!).

Pretty sure Calbi doesn’t do Vinyl any more, you’ll see his credit on a lot of stuff and some one else does the vinyl, Ryan Smith or Joe Nino-if it’s done at Sterling.

Duke Ellington.

Anything by Duke Ellington really, Clark Terry, Johnny Hodges, Thad Jones & Mel Lewis. If I had stopped at one bottle of wine I might be able to reel of some more.

Both of these albums are pretty amazing, the Thad Jones Resonance release sounds amazing brilliant recording. The Duke & Ella is big band at its best.

edit - the Thad Jones belongs in the definitive audiophile pressings. The Duke & Ella has an 8 cd set that you can stream on Tidal, but really needs an Audiophile reissue

So so so so

I’m always hearing that Stevie Wonder represses after the mid 80s are shit and the Mofi’s have gone too pricy. So I did a thing:

5 Japanese OGs (Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Fulfilingness’ First Finale, Songs In Key of Life and Hotter Than July)
1 U.K. OG (Innervisions)

None was extortionate, in fact 2 or 3 of the Japanese were cheap, and all sound like they’re in good condition so I’m really excited to see what I’ve got my hands on! Will report back in due course!

I’ll be curious to hear your results. I’ve got recent presses of Talking Book, Innervisions and Songs In the Key Of Life, and never had any issues that I recall, but I may have not listened with a keen ear to check either, and it’s been a while since I’ve spun them.
