I was listening to a recently acquired 1970 Japan pressing of John Barleycorn Must Die and really digging how it sounds. This is one of those records I've owned a lot of copies of over the years, because I not only enjoy the music, but I've always found it to be a good title for assessing the sound of my system. Not content to just be satisfied with what I was listening to, I decided to compare the Japan pressing to a couple of others I have, including a 1971 US Research Craft pressing, and the 2021 remaster I bought because it was affordable and, well, like I said, this is a record I've had a lot of copies of. Discogs listings for all three are below.
All three sound very good, but to my surprise, the 2021 pressing is notably more crisp and a bit fuller sounding than the others, kind of like a very faint veil was lifted from the music. The 1971 US pressing seems to have the smallest sound stage of the three, and the Japan pressing sounds great--full sound stage and nice separation. The 2021 remaster definitely is the most striking of the three, but it's going to take me a while to decide whether that extra sharpness makes it a better listen or just presents the music in a more striking way. Can't go wrong with either of the two, really, but for anyone looking for a nice copy of this record, the most recent pressing is a very affordable way to go.
