Definitive Audiophile pressings

Next topic: the utter BS of the low number in a numbered set being relevant to anything. I (and many others) don’t buy the idea that they pull the first off the press (or wherever it goes when it’s ready to be sleeved) and have sleeve No. 1 sitting there ready to go.

I’m not saying earlier off the press isn’t relevant. By all accounts it is. Just saying I don’t believe the numbers on the sleeves correlate to the sequence off the press.
Yep this was evident with the relaxin One Steps.

Many times, it seems, the packing process occurs at a different location from the pressing plant.

This is what I'm still confused on. If the top banner on the album said Original Master Recording, then it was from the OG tapes. But if it said Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs, then it could have been digitally sourced. I avoided the latter for that reason, but now it sounds like either could be digitally sourced?
Right, but the OMR banner is for those from which the digitial source was created from the master, and the other is for those from which the digital source was created from a source (probably still analog) that could not be confirmed definitively as the master.

@Mather might be joking about the class action lawsuit, but its honestly necessary. They were wholly dishonest with their process. All of their literature alludes to an analog master. It’s pretty dishonest and disrespectful on their part. You can tell with how they answered the questions that they KNEW people would be upset to hear digital is involved.

If they were transparent, it would have been beneficial for the whole industry, as the stigma surrounding digitally mastered vinyl would have been combated. What better evidence that all analog doesn’t matter when MOFI is doing it.

Smh.

Blue Note, please take a bow.🙂

Blue Note TP/Coherent
(The Classic series may be digital?)

Our philosophy is to provide the most transparent audio system possible. Any desired coloration, therefore, may be added by signal processing, not the system itself. In order to fulfill this goal, most of the analog electronics were built from scratch. Our system features custom transformerless, discrete, pure Class-A electronics from tape head to cutterhead. It was designed to retain all of the warmth, punch and detail recorded on your master. Our tape-to-disk mastering console is one of the most sophisticated in the world.

***NOTE: We are asked all the time if we can master directly from analog sources and keep it analog all the way through to lacquer disk. YES! THAT is our specialty and we are one of the very few places in the world that still do it that way

Giant CDs 😁
I guess this might be the wrong place to say that I play CDs, I still buy CDs, and I really love some of my CDs. It's probably why I have become too cheap to be an audiophile -- it's hard for me to pay $100+ for a vinyl knowing that there are CDs out there for 15% of the cost and 90% of the enjoyment. I spent too much on my vinyl rigs to admit it might be 100% of the enjoyment sometimes.

And, yeah, I do like my MoFi 24K gold CDs more than the regular aluminum versions. But I ain't paying $100+ for them, either. With MoFi, probably ain't even 24 karat gold. 😒

While I’ve only bought 1 cd in the last year, I’m very pro cd. In fact, I’m very pro whatever format works best for the consumer. I’m really excited for someone to compare the Thriller One Step to an original pressing because I don’t think it’s going to be a huge advantage.

Is it me or does Sebastopol seem a little bit too Russian sounding of a name to have made it through McCarthy era America and still be around today…
"The name of Sebastopol first came into use in the late 1850s as a result of a prolonged and lively fistfight in the newly formed town, which was likened to the long British siege of the Russian seaport of Sevastopol during the then-raging Crimean War."

Sevastopol! That’s it! I knew it sounded Russian! MoFi are a bunch commies! You heard it here first!

BTW: Naming a town after an epic Drunken fight is what I’m here for!

Does anyone have any opinions on the Natalie Merchant-Tigerlily mofi? Debating if I want it for $60.
Mine is waiting for a cleaning so no personal opinion, but the reviews I've seen here were really positive (I think MikeH, Mitchwagz, tvham on my searches?) and there's no really an alternative wax option to where you can go - CD sure, but not vinyl. Feels like a buy with confidence if you are comfortable paying that price for the record.

You're right, I didn't realize there were no others on vinyl. I ordered it. Music Directs free shipping wasn't working, but I called them and they straightened it out for me right away.

Re: the Classic Vinyl series: "The pressings are all-analog whenever an analog source is available, with Gray mastering directly from the original master tapes."

To date, Blue Note has been great about stating when something is analog or digital.
If you are doing it right to begin with, why wouldn't a label completely use it to their marketing advantage?

I think Mofi is toast, mainly due to their exotic pricing.
The people doing AAA correctly were making far less money.

Well should I?

Yep. (Unless you already have the CD ;).)
