Definitive Audiophile pressings

If anyone wants to hear Bernie Grundman talk for 115 minutes while Chad, RKS, and Michael 45 sit there and watch, check out the live stream they did earlier.

All joking aside, it was informative and they took plenty of subtle jabs at MoFi in the process.

That was a great video.
Bernie likes to talk. LoL

Pretty much explains why Mofi needs so much time with the DSD files because the quality degrades as soon as the engineers start mucking with the sound. Takes a lot of time to try to work through that process. Cutting from tape they are done by lunch.

Was their Maggot Brain AAA as well? I remember the problem there was something about the tapes not being available, but I may not be remembering correctly. All that to say that if the source is better this time, maybe they can churn out a better product?

It's a funny coincidence that both Maggot Brain and Pieces Of A Man are records that I have originals of, but they're in conditions that are not great. I'd love great sounding clean copies of each.
Maggot brain is from a “fresh tape transfer”. It sounded like they played the album underwater and pressed it underwater haha. This one seems AAA, 45 and I think cut by somebody else. I’m tempted if I can find a decent price but the Maggot Brain pressing left a bad taste in my mouth for that label

Agree. That recent Maggot Brain was quite lousy. A very low volume pressing that sounds flat and lifeless. And the pressing was mediocre at best, somewhat noisy. So the more you crank it, the greater the noise floor. A few folks were saying the 4MWB pressing was better, ha ha.

I dont think there’s been a AAA maggot brain reissue in 35+ years. The German DMM mastered one sounds great though, no complaints on that one which was like $19
Yeah, the German DMM kills the new one. I kept the gatefold and bonus disc from the new one and swapped in the DMM. I gave away the shitty new disc in the old DMM single pocket. So I have a pretty decent custom copy

That German DMM shares it's barcode with like 10 different pressings. I can't tell if they're all actually the same master. But I may have to try one of those...

Yeah, I’m pretty sure I just bit on a cheap deal on Amazon several years ago and that’s what I got. I don’t have any secret tips for how to find it unfortunately - I don’t think it has any sort of hype sticker either.

Also, it's totally stupid BG has to hear about Thriller remaster from social media news.
He wasn't even considered/consulted.
Makes me resent Mofi more.
That company sucks balls.

A bit surprising (and alarming?!) to hear Chad say that the recent revealing of unpublished AS web pages with Steely Dan reissues jeopardized the agreement he has to do those records, and set back that entire operation at least a month. It sounds like those contracts can be complex, and apparently secrecy is a significant element of them.

That was a head scratcher. AS has easter eggs buried in their website and it's the consumer's fault for finding them. Something doesn't add up...

My first guess is that their web team fucked up by making it possible for those hidden pages to be found. Didn't sound like AS is playing games hiding things they're hoping their customers will chance upon.

Yeah, it sounds like him blaming consumer for his companies ineptitude. Maybe it was them putting the cart before the horse, creating websites and pricing everything before the deal was finalized.
It came across to me as more of a friendly warning--you all may think you're being cute and clever by digging for stuff we're not ready to reveal (and he did admit he'd fucked up, so in reality this shouldn't have been possible), but there's a bigger picture here and you might just spoil it for all of us.
