i think the scam accounts will be the fall of discogs more than lloyd starr taking over. although you're right that he's a greedy VC douche.Downfall? Real-time?
It's true that Lloyd Starr joined discogs and immediately instituted the 9% fee on both the records AND shipping. He's a greedy little VC douche, but I don't think discogs will collapse.
I've had selling success on Reddit, but never tried eBay before. eBay fees are just as egregious as Discogs IMO.i think the scam accounts will be the fall of discogs more than lloyd starr taking over. although you're right that he's a greedy VC douche.
i have to think twice at least before buying stuff on discogs nowadays. got scammed by an account that had a few hundred reviews and a 100% rating. and i'm selling elsewhere for the most part. fees are too big.

yep. scammers are not only creating new accounts, they are taking over dormant accounts that had a bunch of good ratings by hacking the passwords, changing the paypal account to their own and selling stuff for a good price.I had no idea the scam accounts had gotten so bad.
but discogs now takes fees on shipping costs too. some people were skirting around discogs fees by charging like $15 shipping but lower prices on records.I've had selling success on Reddit, but never tried eBay before. eBay fees are just as egregious as Discogs IMO.
Outside of these forums and Reddit, online selling just isn’t worth the hassle for most stuff. Brought a bunch of older used stuff to a local that was very appreciative of the stock and gave me $500 in credit. Even if I could have gotten more for some of it, it was not even worth the commission fee, cost of media mail going up again, shipping supplies, etc.yep. scammers are not only creating new accounts, they are taking over dormant accounts that had a bunch of good ratings by hacking the passwords, changing the paypal account to their own and selling stuff for a good price.
i bought a Chet Baker RSD item at about 50% off list. didn't feel weird to me because lots of shops do that just to move RSD stuff that didn't sell. and it wasn't too far off the cheapest current sale price...guy didn't mail it out 5 days later so i contacted them. A few days later, got a message back saying that their account had been hacked and someone had sold a bunch of stuff they didn't have and walked away with the money before they could recover their password from discogs...i got my paypal money back pretty quick but was still very annoying and makes me think before ordering stuff now.

yep. i only really sell on reddit or hoffman these days if at all. otherwise I make a box to bring to Station One or other locals to sell.Outside of these forums and Reddit, online selling just isn’t worth the hassle for most stuff. Currently putting a few together for Station One too haha. Honestly I only bring them my mid-to-high tier stuff ($20+) because they get so much good stuff and price it so affordably. But my experience with them over the years is that they’ll always pay 50% cash if it’s good/desirable. Hard to beat.yep. i only really sell on reddit or hoffman these days if at all. otherwise I make a box to bring to Station One or other locals to sell.
yea-- I try not to bring them any under $20 stuff.Currently putting a few together for Station One too haha. you could have reported to Lloyd Starr though!Yikes. I had interviewed w/ Discogs ~6 months ago for a product leadership position, was excited by the prospect at the time. Glad it didn't work out!
It's definitely dropped in the past 6 months or so compared to during the peak pandemic. People seemed to have a lot more disposable income from not going out much and more time to sit at home to listen to records. I have noticed prices start to drop on a lot of stuff too. Maybe the bubble is bursting a bit (at least compared to the past 2-3 years). As I mentioned, my sales have completely fallen off a cliff over the last several months. I list like 40-50 pieces of my collection at a time and I used to sell 3-4 records a month but I’ve sold 3 records in 4 months. I also haven’t gotten any feedback in like 5 months so it feels dead to me as a seller. Has the vibe/buyer & seller traffic on Discogs changed materially?
That’s a bummer unless this trend isn’t affecting the retail market and bands and labels are still selling ok. I needed a quick chunk of cash last month so I listed a handful of still sealed, out of print records from popular bands for less than what I paid for them and lower than any other seller and they didn’t sell after 4-5 weeks. So I delisted and just put them back into my regular collection again. It's definitely dropped in the past 6 months or so compared to during the peak pandemic. lots of people selling on other forums + facebook + instagram to avoid the crazy paypal and discogs fees.
i've kinda noticed new release records and variants selling out less quickly, but that's purely anecdotal. might wanna try selling on reddit or somewhere else! That’s a bummer unless this trend isn’t affecting the retail market and bands and labels are still selling ok.
