Discogs - Help, Tricks, Secrets And Tips

Do you think it should be different sub labels for jazz blues funk and soul? Or continue under classics since it’s using the C-XXX numbering? Just curious what should take precedence…

i believe what matters most is what vmp themselves is calling it/branding it as. and if it actually is a series in the discogs sense. maybe mister @LeeVing might have an idea or two. i usually ask him for his thoughts on things before i attempt an inquiry on the discogs forum.

VMP calls it their Jazz, Blues, Funk and Soul track. They only have JBFS, Essentials and Rap/Hip Hop now.

Is there a way to add the updated series as an alias like they do with artists? Basically the new name and the old name pull up the same series?

I have no idea if this is possible but I see it with artists where “The Grateful Dead” and “Grateful Dead” pull up the same page.

Seems like a new series then, even with keeping the old numbering sequence. Similar to Blue Note 80 and Blue Note Classics, 80 just morphed into Classics but they are identical in every way

Seems to me that the series should change to whatever they call it on the release. We had to change Vinyl Me, Please. Record Of The Month to
Vinyl Me, Please. Essentials when they did that first series name change.

If they continued to use the C#### numbering, I'd just continue to use this as the series numbering, too.

Unfortunately there are no company/label aliases or alternate name variations (ANV's) as of yet. The only thing kinda close is that the series all have VMP as the parent label, so they act as sublabels under the Vinyl Me, Please profile.

Now. The question is if they have different "branding" depending on what is released each month.

Jimmy Scott – Falling In Love Is Wonderful just has "VMP Jazz" on the obi, that to me is branding for a series called "VMP Jazz". If the next release is a blues record and the release has "VMP Blues", then I think all should probably be listed on their own series...one for each type of genre as printed on the release. Each separate profile can explain how each of the series are released if needed.

One can also go to the Discog forums and see what others there think. Usually "as on release" is what is considered most...even over the labels website.

Yeah, I figure as much but thought it was worth a shot.

Could you add a note somewhere on the new (and old) series profiles that would link them?

Like something along the lines of

“This series is a numerical continuation of the “VMP Classics” series” and then attach a link to that specific series and then put a similar but opposite comment on the VMP Jazz Blues Funk R&B series page?

Looks like it's already there on both profiles.

yeah, but like mr. ving observed: that's not what their stupid j-card/obi says from the images that i can see.

if you'd like a real headache you should search the discogs forum for topics on exactly what constitutes a series. and never, ever try to start a series for the rhino quarterly campaigns :D

Nope - I'll be quick on removing those as a series. There was one that was hanging around for much too long - so I just marked it DO NOT USE earlier this year.

Free rank points for anyone that wants to edit those 18 releases that still have it as a series.

some of those submissions are such a mess anyway. guess i could use a little project today and tomorrow.

I got 2 guys up my ass about some runouts that were done a certain way years ago when that way was allowed and haven't been changed to the current way of entering them...and they don't seem to want to fix them themselves and are in an unsaid sort of way threatening negative votes because I have made some other edits that didn't have anything to do with these runouts....

that truth and method person is a real goof. somehow got voting rights, makes a lot of bad edits, claims nonsense to be true, and argues with wayyyy more experienced users in the forums when called out on any of their foolishness. their comment on this sub reads like a pitchfork review preamble from 2004.

Is anyone else having this issue?

yep - there is a work around by reloading the page in landscape layout.

You can also use an extra / in the url for each page you want to look at...so it would look like //username

www.discogs.com/user//leeving/collection

This way gets a bit tedious having to add the / to every page you look at, but it works. Hopefully Discogs fixes their shit.
