Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

That's where I just ordered my attenuators from, super cheap shipping and they went out the next day. Cheaper than buying from the states by far. Hell cheaper than buying in Canada too.

Yeah they’re a bit cheaper than Ireland too because UK VAT is marginally lower and they’re still just about in the customs union. They are good guys too who’ve always been at the end of the phone to chat through options fairly. I can imagine that those prices are very competitive once the VAT is stripped off and they have always been fair with shipping.

I am! I've actually been using them a lot on my PC and phone. Just a very lush, pleasant sound, and having an included mic on the short cable means I can take conference calls with 'em.
Fab - thinking about getting some for late evening use at home. They review well and looks pleasing on the eye!

Still walnut earcups, but yeah, a different finish. I'm happy with the Classics. :)
The ones I’d seen in the U.K. were all black, and much prefer the walnut finish. £270 here. Not sure how that compare to your side of the pond? Also after the Magni heresy as the Elex-R doesn’t have a headphone amp.

I bought a Magni Heresy and it does the trick with no coloration that I can detect. I'd recommend it, especially at the price.

In the US, the 99 Classics are $299 while the 99 Noir are $199, so not terribly different from your side of the pond.

That’s fair enough. I’ve heard the bronze and black in dealer demo set ups and didn’t like either, I completely thought they were detail at the expense of warmth, it wasn’t there for me. I had a red and a blue on my system. The red is muddy. The blue was good, it was very good when I improved my phono stage, but when I got a much better amp I thought it sounded shrill. The grado’s provide a much more natural, warm sound for me.
Yeah. I wonder if we are arriving at similar areas from different routes. Would love to be able to compare.

I.e. I wonder if the Black is interplaying with my less quality phono and amp in a way that makes the end result more similar to something you would like than not.

Plus I like the fact that PS Audio will give me an $1800 trade-in value for the NuWave so I could realistically get the Stellar for $700
I haven't heard the Stellar Phono, so I won't speak to it's sound. BUT you should read the fine print a little closer on the PS Audio trade-ins. Still a great deal depending on the gear you have and what you are buying, but they will give you *up to* full retail value. Depends on the cost of what you are purchasing, but they won't give you more than 30% of the gear you are buying, regardless of trade in. Granted, in most cases that's still a pretty good deal. I don't think you'd get $750 for that NuWave anywhere else. But they aren't giving you $1800 if the Stellar is all that you're buying. You'd need to be spending at least $6K with them on the transaction to get the full retail trade-in of your NuWave. Having said that, if you were considering buying other PS Audio gear to accompany the Stellar, I would try to get it all at once to max out their trade-in program.

I'd also like to hear your review on the Stellar. I've been running the PS Audio NuWave Phono for a while, which I really like. But I've been looking at other things. For a while I was sold on the Sutherland 20/20. Then I actually decided, screw it, I'll get the Sutherland DUO - which I believe @HiFi Guy recently purchased.

But recently I've been paying more and more attention to the (professional) reviews coming out about the Stellar (which others have recommended on here before, to give credit where it is due) and they're all very, very positive (a trend I've seen in reviews is the opinion that it is punching above its weight class and outperforming more expensive phonos). Plus I like the fact that PS Audio will give me an $1800 trade-in value for the NuWave so I could realistically get the Stellar for $700 (I actually thought they only did trade-ins for other PS Audio gear, but according to their form they will accept other manufacturers!).

As well, I like - much w/ the NuWave - the user-friendly accessibility to on-the-fly gain and loading changes. Anything else I've been interested in you gotta take off screws and go under the cover; which is fine if you're using one cart but I plan on using a couple. I like the ability of the Stellar to change gain/loading in a moment and have the slowest part of setting up for, say, a mono cart being how long it takes me to pop in and out headshells/calibrate tracking. In fact, I looked at Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista positively in the same regard (but an $1800 heftier price tag and some other reasons it didn't hold my attention - FWIW, even had a guy at Upscale Audio tell me he'd choose both Sutherlands - more or less expensive - over the Mu Fi).

Anyway, that was mostly me spewing out my inner shopping logic to really just say, again, that I'd love to see your impressions of the Stellar.

Both are solid choices, but completely different schools of thought. If you look at the description of the PS Audio, they say it is “rich and warm”. In other words it is doing something to the signal, or at least that’s how I see it.

The Duo (different price point I know) was measured by Stereophile (John Atkinson) as being .02 dB of perfect regarding RIAA equalization. So your warmth (if you want that) needs to come from either your cartridge or your speakers.

The PS Audio is more convenient regarding settings- switches, buttons, etc. There’s a trade off however- every switch or button creates degradation of the signal (which is tiny to begin with). The Sutherlands have only 4 gold plated shunts for setting gain and loading. It’s a simpler/purer design all around with fewer “break points” in the signal path. Yes it takes a few minutes if you change cartridges and need to change a setting, but that’s actually not going to happen often.

At the end of the day, I’m beyond thrilled with the Duo (it’s still breaking in). Neither choice is right or wrong- it comes down to what you value.

I'm also just going to toss in a little reminder here, when is the last time you read a professional review that didn't talk about what a great value a product is? I heavily prefer when reviews mention the test unit vs some other specific units.

Honestly, most things are a great value these days. Because most products don't suck honestly.

Just an update @Joe Mac as spoken to Analogue Seduction and after checking what setup I plan to use they recommended the 2M Blue and said they would be happy to fit it their end! There's also a promotion to get a free Spin-Clean with the X1 or X2 and considering I don't have a 'shop vac' am pretty chuffed as it was in my head but wanted to put the budget into the TT so had got a more standard cloth/brush/fluid kit. I know it's not meant to be perfect but will be useful to help batch clean those I already have when the Mofi inners arrive.

In addition, as I'm buying the 2M Blue Cartridge as well, they offered to take 5% off the top. Which is a decent chunk and much appreciated considering it wasn't necessary on their part. Friendly, reassuring and helpful customer support - it makes all the difference to my last order where I only received four word emails and persistently had to chase.

Really appreciate the heads up and thought it worth an update for some additional visibility on them!

Ahhhhh!!!!

So happy they're fitting the 2M Cartridge too. No doubt something I might attempt (or visit a store for assistance with post-lockdown) but was genuinely not looking forward to the idea of manually doing so so soon with it being a recommended addition. Extra time for them to do so isn't an issue as stand will likely take longer anyway!

Anyway sorry this is turning into a word salad but ahhhh sooooooo excited!!! 🎉🎊🚀🍻🎆🍻🚀🎊🎉

Haha! That’s brilliant! Personally I’d have got them to fit the Grado gold (i bought mine off of them) but the blue is definitely a good option and better than a revoiced red! I bought my table off them back when I started, but through amazon marketplace. My real interaction with them was when I was buying my amps and the one I wanted was discontinued and out of stock. They were so good talking to me over several calls whilst I considered the alternatives that they were recommending and I am really happy with my system now!

The spin clean is great, I was shocked how much of a difference a little $99 water bath made, it improved my sound much more than some pretty expensive electronics have! Clean records are happy good sounding records, I’d never spin anything that I hadn’t already washed now!

Welcome to the club and I cant wait to see your system pics here and your records spinning in the What’s Spinning thread!

Oh Joe my poor heart can't take this. With it being £30 more on top it's certainly an option I could no doubt request to change as the order has just been placed. I did ring to see if it was an immediate "oh you definitely should" from their perspective but they advised to stick with the 2M Blue if I was uncertain (or lacking experience) between the two.

This isn't seen as a stupid move is it? Just want to get it right lol 😰

That's great to hear on the Spin Clean! It's definitely my intention to have all my new records cleaned and put in sleeves before I put them to platter and may as well do all those I've got to date before settling in to enjoy. Don't want to start with a backlog!

Thank you, and I genuinely can't wait to be able to do so.

The blue is definitely a good cartridge, you’ll enjoy it with the system you’re putting together and you’ve not made a mistake. A stylus lasts approx 1000 hours of playing. That’s roughly a year for me (I spin ALOT) but 2 for most. When it’s time to change stylus you can have the debate between buying a new blue stylus or a Grado cartridge and swapping.

Also by then the Gold3 should have made it to Europe and whilst I love my Gold2 (which is the one they still stock) all reports on here say the Gold3 is a huge step up.

Now is the time to stop worrying and to sit back and get excited!

Haha thanks Joe. So many unknowns for me and they tend to plague my mind so appreciate the reassurance there! At the moment seems the cart is before the horse on the greener side of the grass post-purchase and pre-receipt. Had I gone for the Grado Gold I'd no doubt be wondering about the Blue as well (as you do so commonly see it recommended and regarded in the price range). So should instead be looking forward to enjoying one well recommended one before seeing if I'd like to try another down the line. It's a good position to be in and I'm fortunate to be able to start out with the setup I am!

Back to boucing off the walls again 😂 happiness levels:
