It’s crazy how the last few years saw the iPhono be one of, if not the most, recommended units out there to being completely unreliable. I likely would have sprung for one, if I didn’t find it somewhat unsightly.

I went through literally this same thing with my iPhono2, Rogue v2, and eventual Sutherland.

ive always just gone turntable - random amp - random speakers or turntables - mixer - active monitors.
never really thought about a pre amp, but now that i moved away from a DJ set up i feel like an upgrade is due.

Well, your random amp probably had a built-in phono stage, or else your turntable would be inaudible. A lot of modern amps no longer have one, so an outboard phono pre-amp is necessary.

Does “random” mean reading every review available for a given piece of equipment online several times, pouring over equipment forums for tidbits of info and user experiences, researching pricing and resale value on multiple marketplaces, and planning out upgrade paths that extend 18-24 months or more?

I’m assuming yes, so I totally relate to random hi-fi equipment as well!

what i meant to say is that i just picked up amps and speakers as they came by without giving much thought to them

You mean you both didn’t choose all your equipment by sticking a pin in a high end magazine and buying what it land on. Playing it safe lads, it’s all about risk/reward...
 
My turn for help 😬 .
I have a Uturn Orbit,acrylic platter with Ortofon Red. Nad 326bee, Vincent PHO8, Polk Rti A7’s.
I listen to a lot of jazz, a little of everything else. I’m finding high pitched instruments especially harmonica to be shrill and piercing which I suspect the red cartridge is responsible for.
My question is would putting a Blue stylus take care of the problem or should I consider switching to a different cartridge? And if so, what cartridge should I consider that’s compatible with the Orbit that a novice cartridge guy could switch out? Not worried about price, just what makes sense in terms of ROI.
Either that or a turntable upgrade :D:p

Grado Black is what I have and I love it. @HiFi Guy will try to sell you on a Gold with the 8MZ stylus unless you give him a budget. :LOL:
 
I have what has been jokingly called the "VMP Starter Kit" (AT-120, Blue Ortofon, Onkyo TX-8020, ELAC 2.0 B6) and a brand new Project Debut III still in the box from last year's holiday sales. Not sure if I should hook that up?

My question is that I'm looking for decent preamp for the above setup. I'm currently using the built in one in the Onkyo which is pretty weak. Any advice for something decent that wouldn't break the bank? I have 2 kiddos under 2 years and money is kinda tight...

Is this one decent or garbage for the scratch?
