Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

They range in price depending on the model starting at $1,200 for the 1200MK7. In comparison the 12000GR id $2,500.

Wow that’s quite the mark up. Granted your currency is nuts but that’s still £1500 which is about £200 more than the general average price for the GR in the U.K. right now.

My only issue is I'm limited to the brands my dealer

My only issue is I'm limited to certain brands if I go through my dealer. 🤷‍♂️

You can get the first two for CAD$500 on amazon.ca

in that budget they’re the 3 that from people on here say are good from their own experience.

If you’re taking your mates discount into hand it’s nigh on impossible for us to guide you before the fact because we don’t know what brands and how much of a discount and thus what better ones are pulled into your price range.

So, if your mate is getting you a discount on the next level up then tell us the brands and options and we can steer you if any of us has experience of them. We may even tell you they’re not as good and to buy one of the other 3 at full price lmao!

I told you our currency sucks!
That totally sucks. Honestly... I love my 1210GR but have never heard the project so they could be comparable. I'd have a shop about for a bargain as I'm sure there's one out there but at the end of the day most will always recommend what they use themself irregardless of other tastes. As Sheryl Crow said... If it makes you happy

Fair enough. From memory I believe these are the companies (brands) he deals with:

  • NAD
  • Pro-ject
  • Audio Technica
  • Thorens
  • Marantz
  • Denon
  • Arcam
  • Cambridge?
  • Audiolab
  • Mark Levinson
  • Krell
  • Tri Art

I’d maybe double check, the only one there that I know of separate phono stages by is pro-ject and, personally, I wouldn’t touch any of their phono stages. Maybe someone else has more insight. The other point is that we can’t really recommend a model because we don’t know what discount you’re getting on it to make it come in budget. Maybe ask about musical fidelity, pro-ject own them now and they make great phono stages, I can attest that I love the one I have, maybe if he stocks pro-ject he’s stocking, or soon will stock, those too.

I can get a NAD PP 2e for $199 + tax. Thoughts?

Dont know it and I’ve not heard NAD be talked up for stand-alone phono stages. @HiFi Guy or anyone else have any thoughts?

PS I can’t find any professional reviews either which I tend not to take as a good sign...
Holy crap, was going to chime in with a Puffin recommendation, I've been looking into it as a @HiFi Guy recommendation if the Musical Fidelity ends up not being replaced or repaired. Then I looked to see if it was available from Amazon.ca, it is, but what a mark up

Oh man, if I lived almost anywhere else I'd have double the albums and gear for the same price I paid here. It's nuts.

Yeah I don’t think the Americans realise how lucky they get it without, or with small amounts of, sales tax. I think your currency, geography and more remote areas play into the extra premium again over us (our VAT is 23% and the U.K. 20% so not small), but the amount of time I see people moaning over what I think is a steal for something.

That said on the other hand no tangerine turd and a healthcare system for all...
