Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

So after reading some shoot-offs between the Pioneer and the Technic tables, I'm going with Pioneer. If only because it seems paying the extra money is for the Technics name for the most part (slight parts differences aside). Is anyone aware of build changes with the Pioneer from 2015 to 2020? Since the Pioneer also has a phono output I'll be able to keep it hooked up to my current receiver in the mean time. What other parts should I be looking for?

Currently I have a Ortofon 2M Blue, Audioengine P4's and a Onkyo TX-8255 receiver with blue jeans cables running everything. Open to all options and opinions now that I decided on a turntable.
As I mentioned above, the PLX doesn't have a built in phono, but you can run it through your Onkyo's phono. I would really start looking at a phono stage at this point, your Ort Blue will probably sound fine, put the money towards a pre-amp, it will make the biggest difference.

I have a LinePhono as well. Absolutely love it. A real lifesaver for an apartment, for sure. Only thing to keep in mind is your turntable footprint - my VPI Cliffwood JUST fits without making any contact with the side lips. A MoFi would be too big, though I suspect you’d be able to add a platform underneath and get the plinth to clear.
I had a Line Phono as well but had to replace it because my X2 turntable was too big for it. ☹

I've had mine for about 3 years now and they didn't have the version with the 7" 2nd shelf so my Rotel just simply doesn't fit.

Also nice John Prine album
I had the same issue with my Marantz PM8006 integrated amp. It wouldn't fit on the 2nd shelf so I had to put it on the 3rd which meant loosing a shelf to store records. ☹

Your remaining budget would go furthest towards a dedicated phono preamp - and one that could be considered end game, or at least very long term. The PLX with something like a used Sutherland Insight (or KC Vibe for less $) would be the heart of a killer system.

Assuming you had something like the above, IMO you'd want to then save another new chunk of cash for speakers, then upgraded amp and you'd be all done.... Or just getting started! 😉😬

I have Zu Libtec cables now with banana plugs going from my receiver to the speakers. I don't know that I would get a sizeable upgrade from swapping that plate out for bi-wire (or be able to notice the difference with my ears) but was mostly curious since I tend to read too much and see too many opinions and get confused!

Here is one of the speakers. My desk was too messy to take a pic of the whole setup haha. Funny enough, my fiancee walked in when I was setting them up and goes "Wharfedales! Nice!" She knows nothing about audio gear but her parents apparently have some vintage Wharfedales at home!

These make me itchy for the Linton's, lol

Sweet, Yea. That's currently my intention is to just transfer over my 2M Blue to the new table and ride that one until I save up for something different down the way.

So I've put Sutherland Insight on a few trackers just to see when prices may come down or a used one pops up. Besides the KC Vibe what other options are available? @AnthonyI as well.

It really depends on your budget, there are price points that get a little crowded with quality phono's that boil down to personal preference, then there are budgets that start to break certain units away from the pack so to speak.........what were you looking at spending, give or take?

My thinking is currently this, the Turntable is going to be fully paid for by a third party and that leaves me with about $300 or so after (depending if I go new or used). I'm personally budgeting over the next two to five months an extra $1,000 to $1,500 of my own money without the extra money or turntable cost being factored into it. Obviously, great to save money and maybe I don't reach that $1,500 ceiling, but I'm prepared to get there if its necessary and if there's a piece I gotta have to make this a setup I'll want to live with for awhile so be it. Not factoring in speakers at the moment as I'm happy with the P4's and am still in an apartment with roommates. Maybe if my situation changes in 2021 speakers will come into play, but with covid and how crazy it is living in a big city who the hell knows.

At that budget I would go with the Insight all day long. If you keep an eye out for a used one or open box you can save yourself a few hundred on it. Going up, you'll need to hit about the $2k+ range for something that I would recommend.

That being said, keep an eye out for used gear, some really nice "end of production" items do come along at a great savings. I had a Jolida JD9 that was fantastic with the PLX, now @MikeH has it and I'm pretty sure he's just as happy with it. If you have time, that's a bonus, you can really do a little research based on price, comments and experience here on the forum and so on. I know @Joe Mac runs Musical Fidelity, and I have great respect for their products as well, not familiar with the M6, but again, you might get some good "used" recommendations to keep an eye out for............the Insight will always be available at $1400, so that's a lock.

I love this set up ;)

Really digging the Jolida so far! Excited to break these speakers in some more to see how the final sound is with everything together!

The Parasound JC 3 Jr hits that price point at full retail. It's direct competition to the Insight. Parasound make a few different phonostages, all of which seem to be well regarded. The full sized JC 3 is $3k and is considered a reference level preamp, so the Jr comes from good stock.

Only thing on there I'd care for would be the record dividers. I mean, I can use some shelving but it is so space specific. But yeah, any shelf would get used.
i also wondered because i plan for a record weight in the future and wondered if that one was a good one or to go with the one Uturn has for itself (even if its not pretty)

same with a new record mat, i wonder if i would be better going back to cork or cork and rubber

It's a nice setup and a cursory glance that amp is listed on ebay at some prices I do not mind one bit...

The Parasound JC 3 Jr is a "junior" version of the John Curl-designed flagship phono preamp JC3+ at half the cost but the overall circuitry is more similar to his big brother, than it is different. This phono stage is definitely worth considering.

Yes @wenis i don’t have the m6 but I do have the Musical Fidelity MX-VYNL. I’d highly recommend it at its price point, I absolutely love the thing, and it’ll take a huge jump (probably to the one @AnthonyI has in his other system) for me to consider upgrading.

That said upscale, who used to have it listed for a very fair $750, no longer seem to have it listed on their website!

How’re you liking the X2 now that you’ve had some time with it?
I absolutely 💯 love it! it's an absolute stunner (in that walnut finish), and a turntable I love seeing in my system day in and day out. Its sound is equally enjoyable although perhaps slightly on the warm side of neutral which could be a turnoff for some. The plinth is large, heavy and solid as a rock, so there is next to no vibration and resonance during vinyl playback. The thick semi-transparent acrylic platter not only looks pretty but improves the overall performance significantly. The addition of a speed box is also a plus since I typically do not like to manually change the speeds by virtue of removing the platter. Also the hum that was found on the Debut Carbon DC is non existent on this model. Overall, I'm getting a vastly different audio experience with the X2. The sound is smooth, balanced and spacious. I highly recommend it. 👌

The plx1000 does not have an inbuilt phono stage. You’ll either need an amplifier with a phono input or a separate phono stage.

Your Ortofon is transferable but if you like you can try a Grado Gold3. I know @Ethos99 is running one on it with, last I heard, very positive impressions. Actually @AnthonyI is that what you have on yours too?

I am and still loving it! Paired with a Pho-8 as well.

Edit: Also, with this setup, it is the first time ever I don't have that itch to upgrade anything!

Putting in the order for the PLX today as well as a reasonably affordable NAD C326BEE (if anyone has any thoughts on that please divulge, only issue I see coming up is that its a bit bottom heavy and not neutral, but I play a lot of house/techno records so that doesnt seem too bad). Then I'll start the process of saving up for a Sutherland Insight and start looking at a new cart. Just going to live with the Onkyo and Ort in the meantime because they've served me well and probably will for a long time.

Thanks again @AnthonyI @Joe Mac @MikeH and anyone else who shared their two cents.

Just know that neither the NAD 326 nor the pioneer has a phono stage so if you don’t already have a standalone phono stage everything is going to be very quiet coming from your turntable!

Good news is that both have a pretty healthy following on this forum and are really liked!
