Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

what stylus do you use if you dont want to go through this suffering and want to enjoy records that aren't perfectly done (aka good stuff sounds better and meh stuff still sound good)
From what I'm told the Nagaokas would also fit the bill for a warm forgiving sound. But I have never owned one.

........why keep asking then? ;)
i wasn't.. i was mostly asking about what would be considered the upgrade from the nude eliptical if you know you dont have enough audiophile high quality records for a shibata

i have actually also thought about the nagaoka MP110, its a very promising cart that i could spring for, my only reservation is that i dunno how well it can work with a uturn tone arm and counter weight and stuff since unlike the ortofon and grado cartridges uturn doesn't sell a turntable with one

I tested out a set of 4 Gaia to be used under my TT because I can have skipping issues if someone walks directly past it on my spongy 1960s hardwood floors. They did nothing to solve the problem. Now I mean I was attempting to use them for a problem that I knew was likely going to require a much bigger fix, so I wasn't too surprising they didn't work. But just know that if you've got really bouncy floors they likely will not solve an issue that big.
Oh yeah I have no current issues like that. Just didn't want the bass from the speakers throwing off the turntable since they are on the same piece of furniture. I do have the speakers on foam currently. Just got this piece Saturday and only done digital so far, about to see how bad it might be tonight. Got some new vinyl coming in the mail tonight too.
Part of me thinks I should get them because they should solve any issue with vibrations and I can always throw them on the next table too should I ever upgrade. I just keep hearing mixed reviews online.

I mean....that's asking.

Bottom line, I am with everyone else in that you should acquire the Ortofon 2M Blue from Diaper Baby, give it several hours runtime, and then report back to us. Interested to hear your opinion after experimenting with the cartridge in person.

will do...

all i meant was i wasn't asking for myself, i was asking because i was curious what people thought was a good inbetween of detail and forgiveness in a stylus for those who can't go full shibata power danger zone but are spending money on a higher end cartridge (im just randomly saying like over 400 bucks)

I just couldn't stop thinking about how good of a deal this is, er was.

I think the grado cult might be right. An in between might be an affordable MC from grado.

Grado will never release an MC, they actually pioneered the early days of MC and ditched it because they didn’t think it has the same quality as MI. All grado cartridges, up to the the 10k top of the range are MI. The “in between” is when you move into the Timbre series and beans and there are options for Low Output etc.

Yes. MI correct.

Probably all true.. it's just my issue was too much bass on my system with the most entry level grado (the bass felt like like it was melded to the point where lower frequencies in the voice mix in with the bass kicks instead of having clarity), though that could be a lot of things, whether it be my cables or my platter mat or my amp/preamp, or headphones. I just gotta experiment, 2 of these are already changing soon and I just changed my mat from acrylic to cork and it was more dynamic

Got my mind set though

My MP200 was more forgiving than my 740ML... but the 740 sounds generally miles better when the pressing is decent.

Hi all -- First time posting on this thread and could use some kindly expert advice.

I recently acquired a Harmon Kardon HK-720 turntable. Got a new belt for it and it works great. But the cartridge may need to be replaced. It handles new vinyl well but with used vinyl, compared to say my U-turn Orbit, it seems pick up more noise/crackle because of a superficial mark or very slight storage warp on the LP.

As such, what's a good (or even great) P-mount cartridge I could put on this TT to do a better job playing less-than-perfect vinyl? (Right now it has an Audio Technica AT85EP on that probably was last used in the 80s.)

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi and welcome!

First, that turntable uses a standard mount cartridge. If it’s got a P mount on it now, that’s because it’s using an adaptor. That’s good news- it opens up your possibilities.

That table originally came with an Ortofon OM series cartridge- the OM-10 that is still available for under $100.

Another oration would be a Grado. They start at $80 and fit the bill as far as what you are looking for.
