Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Bought some banana plugs as I want to hook up the Denton's..

Did I buy the wrong ones or is it normal that thet stick out a few millimeters like this? I guess I should get plugs that are slightly shorter so they can sit flush with the port right?

Should help -

Yeah so the extra "jacket" that slides over isn't what I have. I have this one with just set screws:

I've hooked them up to my old speakers now and made sure everything sounds good, new amp is also checked out.

Just thinking if you could theoretically short anything out since I'm not exactly isolated with the plugs I have.

Well, if I saw that video correctly, it looks like both grub screws go against the bare wire.

If you're worried about shorts, you can always get some heat shrink tubing.

Alright knowledgeable folks, question from a mate of mine. He's looking at a Pro Next X2 vs a Rega P3 vs a Technics SL1500C. They all have some advantages over each other but as far as I can tell they're all a pretty fair comparison in terms of quality. Anyone have any reasons why one of those should be removed from the list? Any reason why one is head and shoulders above the other, something I've missed?

Also, what's the current thoughts on $600 USD and under phono stages in terms of forum favs?

If you’re putting a P3 in that mix it’s overpriced. Which they tend to be your side of the ocean. Over here it’s priced a little above the higher end of the debut carbons, around £500-600. It’s a fine table but it’s not worth similar money to the other two you’re quoting.

$600 is funny old price point for the phonos, nothing jumps off the page to me so I’ll let someone else say what they think there.

I only put $600 as a sort of high point, because likely that tops out around $1000 CAD. Something under is fine too. Just wasn't sure what the current forum favs are for around that price point.

If maxing at $1000 I think the whole forum would say keep an eye out for a used Sutherland Insight. I’m sure some of the other guys would have suggestions for the price range though!

That's like... Almost double $1000 CAD. THINK SMALLER JOE. His current stage is a ProJect Phono box. So like, pretty much everything is an upgrade over that...

Okay, comparables to a Lehman Black Cube, taking into account that's it's almost impossible to get a Schiit Mani or Vincent Pho 8 in Canada...

The Project X2 fixes virtually all the issues I had from a design stand point on the Debut series, mainly being the 9" arm and speedbox. But the SL1500C also offers a lot of the best parts of the 1200's, with very reasonable compromises being made for the price point. I haven't handled either, but I get the feeling the 1500 might just be lower maintenance and easier to work with.

Honestly, if you can't get ears on both I think you have to just make some choices on the deign elements, and maybe factor in some wants/potential use cases. Does he want to mess with changing belts over time? Will he be changing carts here and there? Looks might be a fair tie breaker if neither of those things rock the boat one way or the other.

Personally, I'd lean a little toward Technics for the headshell swapping and the general zero upkeep, bulletproof nature. But I could think of just as many good reasons to justify the X2.
