Well, what the heck was my problem then? I recalibrated everything a few times, and no matter what, it was always really jumpy. Super prone to footfalls. Whenever it hit the run out groove, it would jump back into the last track, and keep doing it over and over. I'd put the Mofi Ultratracker in, and those issues would go away. I chalked it up to compliance issues. Maybe something else was amiss?
Suspended floors? I can see how that might cause an issue with some cartridges and not others. I’m on a slab.

Ya, I don't get that one at all. The Opus3 is rock solid and I never had any skipping or hopping around in any way......very strange.

Sometimes, you have to chalk something up to just not playing ball. I’ve had it happen. For example, I could NOT get the StudioTracker I had to track without vocal sibilance across the board. I tried EVERYTHING. Can’t tell you how many adjustments I made. It was maddening!

That sounds crazy, but there might be something to it. @HiFi Guy lent me his Grado Sonata............correct me if I'm wrong @HiFi Guy , I can't remember at the moment, but I could not get that cart to play nice for me, which was really disappointing.

I thought you just didn’t like it. It wasn’t a Sonata. It was a Statement Platinum2. @kvetcha has it now, maybe he will chime in?

Yeah, suspended floors. The Zephyr hasn't had any issues either thankfully. Maybe the Grado is just springy enough in my particular situation. That said, I didn't have this issue with the Grado on the Technics. Oh well, the Grado is on the Technics now and makes a killer 2nd table combo.

Guys, guys, guys! I’ve just installed my first cartridge! Wasn’t too scary actually once I got into a run with it. Ended up using a Lenco gauge printout from back in the day, and it’s playing great. Only issue was I tried to verify my placement with the Geo-Disc and couldn’t get it to agree. It seems to be tracking fine though.

My issue now(!) is that the cables aren’t long enough to reach my amp, hence the temporary measures in the photo. Luckily, my local store has a second hand Musical Fidelity LX2 Going cheap...

That makes sense. The Zephyr is twice as stiff (half as compliant) as the Grado.

I have a freind with my old Orbit/Black2 with very bouncy floors who had issues with Grado bounce, it was a combination of setup issues and isolation. Runs well now after a proper setup (he did it with paper protractor over Zoom with someone from Uturn), and made a homemade sandbox for about $50.

My first cartridge swap was a nightmare. My second was easier. My third was pretty relaxed.

I'd got myself all het up about it, and it actually turned out OK. My biggest issues were caused by the age of the turntable - needed to try and turn Imperial screw holes into Metric ones to get the cart in the headshell.

Now playing my test record (Blur's Parklife). Sounds markedly better than my old crappy Ariston table. It was an automatic, so I'm having to get used to dropping and raising the arm!

Is there a speed checking iPhone app that folk recommend? I have one called RPM, I think, that only covers 33.33 in the free variant (turns out I’m 3% slow). Is there a gold standard one?

Nice! I've got a Bogen B62 (actually a Lenco L70) that I purchased a sweet, Italian-made flywheel for a few years back. Built like a tank!

Good luck with your table/new cart.

Thanks!

I also have a GL69, which is basically a B52. It's my dad's old table, and I need to get a new plinth for it. I met a guy in passing in London that does Lencos up, and he convinced me to go with the 75. Happy to keep it stock for now, then start playing with upgrades.
