Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Somehow I think you suspected my Alfa is in need. Oil change, tire rotation, front brake pads next week. And another set of tires in about 5000 miles.

This is making cartridges/styli/tubes look cheap. Thank you. 😎
Ouch.

The stylus replacement on my Linn Adikt that I need to do shortly is a lot cheaper than the two tyres I’ve just had to replace. I know what I’ll get more joy out of! But ‘apparently’ it’s not okay to have bald tyres on a rear wheel drive...

That looks great now! Really clean and sleek.

Anyone have experience with portable hi-res players?

I’m gonna catalog my vinyl in 24bit 196 and would like to be able to throw some of it on something portable that sounds great with headphones and isn’t horrific to use interface wise. Otherwise nothing fancy

I'm not gonna argue with you using 196 although I would not. I would, however, ask you to seriously consider using the high res format as long term storage and encode to something sane for portable listening so that your player options open up substantially. I personally use Opus encoding.

A lot of portable players run Android, so the interface is pretty similar to smartphones. I use an iBasso DX220, which I like pretty well, especially the user-changable amp modules. I'm less pleased with the battery life and recharge time, althought that might be expected when I run a high-powered amp module and open-back headphones from a DAP. I believe @Shin Hayata has a Hiby. I'm sure he'll be happy to share some thoughts about it.

I'll also second @debianlinux's recommendation. I can't hear any difference between a hi-res FLAC file and an Opus encoded with the standard settings, but the Opus files are MUCH smaller. I like having my FLAC files on an external drive and cloud storage though.

Nice! How is everything working and sounding ?
I want to give it a little bit of time to break in the new stylus before making the judgement. I don't have a real control variable as I made a bunch of changes all at once. However, it seems that so far so good! I'll keep you posted. I plan on spinning a few records this morning. Moved my work-from-home space down to the basement today.

Just picked up an Audio-Technica AT6006R Safety Raiser and, well, it works. Feels dense and well-made, attaches sturdily, does what it says on the tin. A little steep at $129, maybe, but it looks less cheap than a Q-Up. Recommended!
Thanks! This is something that I had no idea existed yet immediately need in my life.

The only thing you have to remember is to reset it after each side, or else the tonearm will bump into the raised platform and you'll get a skip.
Thanks. I did a quick read on it and think I can manage that. My bigger issue is...er... falling asleep during late night listening! Don't judge me!

I often listen while I'm working and sometimes I'm mid-task when a side ends, so it's really nice to be able to swap at my leisure rather than feeling like I'm slowly wearing out my stylus.

The actual raising action is really nicely damped and subtle. You almost don't realize it's happened except for the sudden lack of runout noise.
