Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Along with the great advice already mentioned. If the cart/stylus looks fine, then run through a full setup. Check everything. Table level, VTA, VTF, overhang, etc... Something could have gone squirrelly on you. The very slightest of "settling" can cause these kind of issues.
Especially tracking force with temperature changes due to changing seasons.

fremer now claiming the onzow is kinda dangerous.. and i cant use a stylus brush because of STRONG tremors... but then again I'm unsure about trusting him because of his hot take machine and yelling at the in groove for hating ERC and saying that laquers aren't supposed to be played but archived

Peter Ledermann also dislikes the Onzow, but I’m not really convinced. What’s Fremer’s beef?

edit: read the article, seems like a legitimate concern. might be time to switch to BlueTac!

i'd have to buy some and find a way to not get my tremery hands to cause issues... (and where to put it on my turntable to make sure that it doesn't stick on to the platter or the stylus)

With one's imagination, anything can be solved! Quick thought...mount it on a small plastic case....sort of like how the Onzow tac is on something. Heck, if someone has the Onzow and no longer felt safe using it, they could deconstruct it and repurpose the dish. Basically, something in your house can surely be used as a makeshift stand to keep it off the TT/platter.

Edit: Soundsmith suggests using a coin....

Ok, I’ll be getting my mom’s inheritance around February and in her remembrance I’m going to upgrade my system. Right now I’m planning on keeping my pro-ject debut TT and the phono pre. I plan on getting the ELAC debut 2.0 bookshelf speakers. My question is…do I ditch the phono pre and get a receiver with a dedicated phono input? Do I just keep it and plug it in to a non amplified channel? also want the Bluetooth streaming option. What receiver would match the price point of the speakers?

If you’re looking at a dedicated pre maybe have a look at the Darlington Labs ones. They get a good write up around here.

With the debut the new models EVO and PRO both have speed change which is a nice upgrade to have, especially as with a project you have to lift the platter to move the belt if you get one without a speed change. Of the old models, if you can still find in stock, the Esprit SB has both the speed change and the upgraded acrylic platter.

For that kind of system everyone loves the NAD 316, safe and sound so some nice factory refurbs. It also has the phono stage on it so you don’t have to buy one unless you choose to. At the price point down there is also some love for the Onkyo amps.

If choosing between a better amp or a standalone phono? I’d probably go for the better amp to begin with. Especially one like the NAD whose phono stage isn’t a slouch. You can always then look to upgrade to a standalone in years to come if the itch strikes.

For streaming Wi-Fi is a much more solid option to Bluetooth, in terms of range and bandwidth. At the very beginner stage for an iPhone family getting a used Airport Mini on eBay will allow you to AirPlay to it. For Android houses a used chromecast audio off eBay will allow you to cast to it.

This is the link for the NAD amps

Man just spent close to 1K on Audio equipment and the day is just getting started.

Are there turntables in production today that one could reasonably expect will last you 25 years? Don't have much experience but it does seem like in a lot of other cases, they actually do not make things like they used to and stuff is landfill-bound within a decade.

If so, how much do they go for?

Parts are important in this, vintage Dual,Thorens, Garrard, etc are still going 50 years later because you can still find replacement parts and techs that know the units well.

Technic's have been going a long time now too, they area direct drive model.

What is your budget ? I just want ask before I say something like a Linn LP12 for ie
