Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

I was fiddling with the settings on my sub when I realized that my stereo receiver has pre outs. Before I was just running an rca out of the mono output of my receiver to one of the subs rca inputs. A few questions for those more in the know.

1. Is there any difference in using a mono output vs the pre outs to my sub?
2. If I run from the pre outs should I use one cable or two? Said another way, should I use both the left and right channels?

Should not be any significant difference. The sub is a mono speaker, so the summing is happening somewhere either way.

My take would be that if you use the pre should really be going from both as you’ll want both right and left information, as they contain different information, even if that’s then summed into a single sub.

As for differences. It depends on the amp but some only pass bass information through the sub channel. By going through pre out you should be getting full range which may make the sub more musical and blend more seamlessly with the speakers. The amount of difference, if there even is any, will largely depend on the amp and sub that you are running themselves. At the very least it could be an interesting experiment!

Generally sub-outs will either send the LFE channel, if applicable, or will otherwise apply an internal, configurable low-pass filter before outputting. But yes, behavior does depend on the amp.

That’s kinda why I like have the high level input and would be tempted to experiment with the pre out, even just to sate my curiosity!
I use speaker-level inputs for my tube amp and the LFE input for my home theater amp. You have to apply a low-pass filter either way, it just depends on which end. I can't say I prefer one to the other, but balancing the settings to be able to do both with the same sub was...fun.

Off to my dealer for a demo of a new integrated amp on Friday to replace my Elex-R. I’ll be taking a selection of my records that I know well and are good at showing up a systems ability, but it got me wondering what everyone’s go to test tracks are? Thought it might inspire me to add some more to the demo list.

I’ve always been more an album than a track sorta guy but the pressings I always use to run new gear through irs paces are the discbox in rainbows, one step blood on the tracks and more recently the mofi white album.

what amps are you looking to demo?

My Bill Evans mofi one step and a third man pressing of Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters are my for sure reference listens. The Waters will reveal sibilance if anything is off.

Nice solid selection. I have Blood on the tracks envy now (again) - thanks! 😭 I am going to demo the Naim Supernait 3 with the Hi-Cap DR.

Haha sorry!

Nice choice. The Naim amps are meant to be mighty fine!
I liked the 5i when I got the Elex-R but ultimately plumped for the Rega but my system has changed a lot since 2018. The SN3 if I like it should be a good step up, annd will help balance my system out a bit and give the Spendor A7 some more grunt and control, and also gives me the added benefit of a headphone amp which I don’t have currently. Helpful for the kids late at night!

Looking at converting my bedroom to a listening room with a bed. The room is relatively small and I plan to keep it very sparse. I am leaning towards using a low equipment table and just using my existing SL1200GR with Grado Gold 3 and Darlington MP7 and maybe adding a Leak 130 and a pair of Linton 85ths on stands. For this budget ($3k) am I missing out on something dramatically better?

Hey! Lintons are great! They tend to work ok in smaller spaces so long as you can have at least 30cm air behind them so they don’t get boomy being rear ported.

I don’t have much experience of the Leak other than there is someone on here who loves it and someone I know elsewhere who didn’t. The person who didn’t felt it didn’t give enough oooomph but they were in a much larger space so that definitely factors into that. There should be a synergy because they’re different sub brands of the same company. Same goes for audiolab and quad.

If you don’t mind not having a removable stylus and so needing to get the trade in exchange and fit a new one every year I think the the opus 3 is a good way ahead of the gold for similar money. You’d have to get the High Output one with the MP7.

I’m the guy on here with the Leak who loves it. I have a medium sized listening space and never thought it has lacked for anything. The system can get much louder and oomphy than I’d ever need. I think it’s profile fits the Lintons nicely.
