Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Okay, that's all the stuff I'm familiar with. I just wasn't sure if there was something new. I'd guess a couple hundred bucks is reasonable for them, and sturdier is probably good for a house with a 5-year-old.

Hahaha, I mean I read this page starting with @David A and then @Mather, so yeah fancy dudes was what struck me 😂

Single mom with three kids and ADHD, probably isn't going to go that research vintage route. But I will mention it in case her ADHD daughter wants to dive into research. It's always possible.

I love that you brought it up! I have the RT85, and I love it, and always thought the 81 and 82 looked pretty good for entry.

Is there something better than an Onkyo for a versatile, inexpensive receiver? That was the name being thrown around a bajillion years ago when I got mine, but I don't know if somebody else has moved up into that generalist beginner bracket
I had an Onkyo TX-8260 (I believe it was around $399 new) as my first receiver and it worked great for what I needed. Had Bluetooth, so you could stream through it too.

I wouldn't totally write off some powered speakers for entry level at that age and starting in the hobby either. But all depends on how much money they want to invest up front and how loud they can tolerate their daughter playing her tunes.

@Mather have you tried this yet on your fancy cables??

Sold out

+1 on the AT-LP60 or AT-LP60X. The AT-LP60 is discontinued, so you may be able to find it cheap.

For the sake of sanity and the fact that it can be upgraded, go with the Fluance RT82. You’ve got automatic Christmas and birthday gift ideas with the upgrades of the youngster takes to the hobby.

Okay fancy dudes, here's the assignment: a single mother on a very limited budget has an 11-year-old daughter who wants to get into vinyl. They need recommendations for a beginner setup. Decent, upgradable, but very very entry level for now. The 11-year-old is hardly an audiophile (yet). And she has two younger sisters, so nothing can be too precious and fragile and expensive. They are able to save for the right things, but it'd be nice to be able to put it together this summer instead of like a year from now.

I am way too out of the loop right now to give any decent recommendations, so I turn to you.
If she digs the Beatles, the Sgt Pepper tt is a great deal at $249

Automatic TT would be an option to consider.
There are a few different models out now.
Might keep some scratches at bay and the stylus in good order, especially for beginners.

Yeah, @GritNGlitter - these dudes are fancy! This is what I had at 12 years old...

A Fluance? Ha!

"Very, Very entry level" today looks like this Audio Technica bundle with powered speakers. Can't go much less expensive without a visit to the thrift store or to Crosley crap. For 11 years old, this is awesomeness.

is the project debut carbon evo an upgrade from a U-turn or a sidegrade, there was a little bit of debate because one person said the tonearm on a U-turn was budget and a pro-ject is a fairly sizable improvement... i don't plan on buying any new turntable anytime soon but I now have more money than I thought id have and that's giving me a bad case of upgradeitis

I’d vote for a sidegrade. I think you’d have to go to the Debut PRO before you’d see a meaningful improvement for the money.

People shit on the u-turn for no reason than to do, it's a solid turntable, if you are happy with it enjoy it. If you want to upgrade, I'm fairly certain you need to think about at least a grand before you're going to really feel the improvement.
