Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Last I looked, ain’t no one got them in stock anyhow. I’ll get you a close shot when we get back home. The grain looks nice. The only slight set back is the texture is in a recurring pattern so if you look reeeeeaaaallll close it ruins the effect.
Any chance for a close up my dude?

So now it's a question of do I pre-order the NAD 3050 with a BluOS and Dirac option with an unknown ship date... or go with the base model and maybe save some coin...

My real dilemma is how to get the most out of this. My end goal is to get the 3050 hooked up to my TV and get the Lintons into a space where I can really turn them loose. Downside is there are too may little hands in this house that don't respect dad's hi-fi equipment. The 1yo has already taking a liking to finding the hardest toys and banging them on whatever happens to be in sight.

So do I convince the wife that the next big home project should be the basement so I can move the office and home theater downstairs? That would free up the 4th bedroom to be a guest bedroom or do I just keep my little hidey-hole office for the time being and use the Dirac to make the most of a tiny space.

Also if I get the 3050 I'll have the NAD326BEE floating around (along with the ELACS and old Orbit) that could make a killer second setup. But then where the hell would I put that setup... And with a BluOS module in the 3050 that would make the BluSound Node I have obsolete?

Questions, questions, questions...

Contact Peter Williams at Quirk Audio. I’ve used him before and he did great work on my NAD C272 amp.

Thank you for the recommendation. Sent him an email and he doesn't seem to confident working on this model. Don't really want to pay all the shipping to send this heavy ass amp across the country only for him to confirm he can't work on it...

If anything this has been a lesson for me not to splurge on audio equipment on this stage of my life. Now I have this piece I've invested a significant amount of money into, that I can't use and am very hesitant to let go of due to the cost-sunk. If I can't find someone local to work on this my best bet might be to just send it to Music Direct and see how much I can get in trade-in :(

Sorry that I'm late to this situation. I know I read your initial post about it back aways, but I don't remember the details. Is this not under warranty? And even if that's the case, what does NAD have to say about it? Or the place you bought it? If this didn't come from a dealer that stands behind what they sell and supports their customers, then I'd say that's the lesson to be learned.

If your tv has an optical out you’ll be able to feed it in to the optical in on the DAC of the NAD. You’ll just need to set the tv settings to output 2 channel stereo, or virtual surround through 2 channels, because the NAD can’t do much with 5.1 surround.

EDIT: I tell a lie. It has a HDMI eARC port. That makes things much easier for connecting a tv. Just use a hdmi cable from the arc or eARC marked hdmi port on your tele. Same applies re 2 channel and 5.1 though.

With you already owning a bluesound node id not bother with the bluOS card unless you’re absolutely convinced you need Dirac. The streaming software platform it uses is the exact same bluOS one as the node. If you keep the node you’d need to connect it with coax/optical to the NAD DAC because the 3050 only has one analogue input and I’m guessing you’d be using that to keep your Sutherland phono stage in the loop.

My buddy is just having a world of problems trying to hook up his 3050. Can't get any sound via optical and also can't get any via line or phono or anything. He got the module and I'm inclined to think it's somehow been activated and it's cancelling out his input selections. But very odd. I think his tv is likely sending 5.1 or something and that may be why the optical port isn't working but I'm not entirely sure.

Oh random! I know in the past when I’ve accidentally sent 5.1 to a stereo amp over the analogue it’s only sent the front 2 channels and sounds weird, it’d figure that over digital it might drop because it is not capable of decoding it.

Something does sound really wrong in the setup there for sure. As the modules are removable I’d be tempted to take it out and try the inputs without it to discount a faulty/badly installed module.

Yeah I wish I could get my hands on it. Trying to solve the problem over text is doing my head in.

Also unless it’s fucked it is usually really dumb. I once spent a week trying to figure out why there was no sound. The amp I had at the time had the headphone socket, and a load of tone controls behind a panel. I’d been listing to headphones and disconnected the 3.5mm leaving the adaptor to the bigger socket on the amp in and closed the panel 🤦🏻

I bet! Can never fully get exactly what you want to say out in quite the same way!
In other news I've been going through some of my more... CONGESTED or flat pressings to see how the new system does with them and man... It's pretty wild. Like I cannot believe the difference in stuff like Spiritualized Ladies and Gentlemen. It honestly sounds like an entirely different pressing, same for Winehouse Back to Black. It's kinda making me reconsider what I thought a bad pressing or master was.

So I posted here awhile back, but my NADC375BEE hasn't been working properly, just funtions for a few seconds before turning into shutoff (red light) mode. I've been having a hell of a time trying to find a repair place in the East Bay that works on these and am starting to run out of options. Really sucks not being able to spin records.

Worst comes to worst I'll need a new amp, which is a major bummer as this is easily the nicest one I've ever owned. If I needed a replacement and didnt want to spend more than $300, what would by best options be? Just want something analog, that can drive my speakers, and has a headphone input. Want to line them up now so if I decide to go that route I can just bite the bullet and get something on the way. Would of course prefer to get this amp repaired first, but that's becoming less likely as this goes on (reaaaaally don't want to bring this heavy ass amp into SF).
Ship it (insured) to the nearest NAD service center. You’ll be likely well under $300 for a repair.

The issue is that’s a great sounding amp. Nothing you can buy new will sound nearly as good.

If it were me (and I’ve not done this with hi fi) I’d put an envelope in the box taped to the top of the amp. Enclose $20. Write a note asking the tech to check it thoroughly.

I do this with my car. When I had my Alfa, I quietly inquired as to whether the service manager and Alfa mechanic drank alcohol, and if so, what they liked. I rolled in for scheduled maintenance 300 miles shy of the warranty expiration. I told the service manager that there was one more issue I hadn’t told them about- a horrible clanking on the passenger seat that I’m sure he and the Alfa mechanic could figure out.

They figured out the clanking was a bottle of whiskey and a bottle of rum. They also found $5000 of issues that didn’t cost me a cent.

I have a theory that no one sets out to make a bad sounding record on purpose. A great turntable and phono stage can show records for what they are- often better than what they were originally thought to be.

@Mather, I just hooked up the echo finally and it performs exactly as I would expect. I think @Joe Mac may have a good idea with either taking the card out or checking both the bluos/Dirac apps to make sure he hasn’t turned something on or off by accident.

Yeah it's hard to explain but even stuff I know wasn't mastered well, sounds good now. It's still clear it's not mastered well. But the stage makes the deficiencies sound really good while not actually hiding them. It almost makes them sound like they were done on purpose. Even bad mastering and flat pressings have weight and depth and presence now. It's weird. Suffice to say I'm really enjoying myself with the new gear.
