Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Well in two English speaking countries who inexplicably believed the effluent spewing out of two big entitled attention seeking babies with stupid hair.

Ok so I might be getting off light here…

I think it could be heat. I’ve had it on, but with the power amp off below, steaming music to it all night. It’s touch cool and not tripped out after 3 hours 🙏🏻

Will leave it on standby overnight again and see if it trips out. If it doesn’t I’ll get to buying some wooden isolation…

praying for you haha.

€1500 to €2500. Preferably towards the lower end. Higher end is for something perfect.

Bryston isn’t overly available here. In the UK yes, but brexshit has murdered that option. Also the used market isn’t anywhere near as good as in the states, it’s really eBay or what the two higher end dealers on the island have had in on part exchange.

The Hegel is likely the best but also the most expensive. I am comfortable with the combo of an expensive preamp and a cheap DAC. I use a Schiit Modi 3 DAC (US$99 at the time of purchase) with a Bryston B100-SST integrated (US$3500 MSRP when new). It sounds no different to me than when I switch to my US$450 Topping D70s DAC.

Agreed. I think a good pre adds more than a good/better DAC. Plus, a good pre adds to the enjoyment of more than one source/format.

I still use and enjoy my 1st gen Mytek Liberty. No I2S, but very good sound.

Yeah totally. I just need a DAC with the right inputs to make the most out of the fancy new CD transport which tends to push you out of the entry. If schitt still made the gungnir it and the Freya + would have been perfect. Hell I’d be happy with the bifrost but it’s a different size so I can’t stack them and I only have one shelf 😂

Fingers crossed when I do a bit of system rejig to help keep the PS Audio cool none of this will be necessary and I can save a few squids!

The Topping D90LE DAC at US$800 will handle all the outputs from the Jay’s Audio transport except the BNC. You’d have to check the IIS pinout to make sure it matches the Topping, if you want to use that option.

As another low cost test, is it possible to mount your pre in a shelf below the amp?

Yeah I love it for tv but for music I’d maybe do a podcast or some internet radio. But then it’s in my living room so it’d only be used for that if I was cleaning and didn’t want to have the big tube amp on. I thought it sounded good for what it was but then equally I want actively listening whilst sat down in front of it.
Hadn't considered a soundbar, and we'd only be able to get one if we wall mount the tv, as the stand is pretty small on the one we have just now. It's going to be in a pretty big living, dining, kitchen area, so I was thinking speakers first. Might wait until I'm in before I decide.

It’s a pity they don’t make the base I have anymore. The tv sits on it which was perfect for me for exactly the same reason.

I need to remember when I final get a tube phono to put that thing far away from everything else.

Tube phono won’t have the same issues. Small signal tubes generate some heat but it’s the big power tubes that do be cooking. They won’t be in an phono stage. Also with cable management and a single width rack the power amp is always naturally going to be on the bottom and heat rises, the phono will be near the top to be next to the turntable. You’ll be fine.
