Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Hey folks. Got myself spinning in circles a bit on my path forward so hoping to talk it out a bit.

I’m moving into a loft space that will necessitate using a speaker setup much less often. The loft is flanked by two bedrooms so will be using a headphone setup most of the time. There is however no space issue up there, it’s a larger space than the room I’m leaving. So I don’t HAVE to decrease my footprint.

Importantly, I am on the waiting list for a Decware 300b which I think will probably be another 18-24 months.

Over the last week, I have settled on a path forward numerous times, only to keep looking and thinking and changing my mind.

At this point, I have traded/sold the MoFi turntable, the Pass XP-15 and the Luxman D-03x (to an N&G member).

I have added a Vinyl Nirvana Thorens turntable and a Woo Audio WA-5 LE headphone amp and a pair of Western Electric 300b tubes.

I still have the M700u/PL Evo 300p/Bluesound Node/Harbeths and JBL sub along with a Sennheiser HDV600 headphone amp.

I have considered/am considering a few options:

1. Add a HiFi Rose 250a to cover the DAC/streaming setup for the headphones and a Rogue CMIII for the speaker amp and phono stage. I would then sell the M700u, PL Evo, Node and HDV600. Depending on my sale prices I’d make some money back here, but not a ton tbh.

2. Add a NAD M33 to cover amp/streamer/DAC and phono. This would decrease the footprint a ton, leaving me with just the M33, the turntable and the Woo WA5.
I would then sell the M700u, PL Evo, Node and HDV600. Depending on my sale prices I’d make a decent bit of cash as well.

3. Keep everything I still have left. Add a Musical Fidelity MX DAC to pair with the Node and Woo headphone setup, and a Musical Fidelity MX Vinyl for the Thorens. Save no dough here at all but that was never the point. But the M700u and PL will see very little use so may be overkill and I decrease the setup by zero boxes.

4. Foregoing the speaker setup altogether, selling the M700u, PL, Harbeths, JBL, and concentrating on the headphone setup. Would need a DAC and phono. Could go a ton of directions.

Curious what some of you might do. My priority at this point is to get the streaming headphone setup sounding great.

Any input, different ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance.

One of the unfortunate things about my listening area setup is that I am limited to having the speakers on an actual shelf. I have it remedied by being able to have them a good distance from the wall. I also have both of them sitting on IsoAcoustics pucks for dampening/isolation. However, with some speakers - having them on stands is nearly a necessity. Not sure if that's the case for the R3s.
It’s not ideal but I found mounting my speakers to the wall was great for my current setup. (Not ideal because they are up high). Toe in and room correction (DIRAC) were essential to getting them sounding their best.

I don't think I'd get rid of speakers even if you don't use them much. Especially if space isn't the issue. That seems like something you'll replace fairly quickly.

Honestly I think I'd live with what you have for a while and see how it settles into the space.

I'm saying this as someone who's bought quite a few things from you! Haha.

#4 is my least favorite option as it’s the most drastic. I am considering it because I know it’s fairly short term (until I get the Decware) and once I do get it, the Harbeths will need to go anyways.

But I would 100% miss speakers.

What is the likelihood that you will move back into the other space later?

I'm on board with @Kris in letting things settle down a bit before making a lot of changes. You have a very good headphone set-up now to use. My inclination would be to wait 90 days after the move to the new space; you won't likely lose resale value in that timeframe.

There’s a good likelihood that I will have a dedicated space again in a few years. Kids are in/just out of college and still using their rooms regularly. Once that changes I will get one of those rooms. But it will be after I get the Decware that will necessitate new speakers.

Unless you keep the M-700u. I'm sure resale is figuring into the financing of new equipment, as well.

But, I have a bias. I'm a buy-and-hold type of guy. I still have equipment I have not used for 2+ years. I know that you like to turn-over stuff more often.

Might as well hang tight, you’ll have a better space later and you won’t feel the need for a stopgap before the decware.

I have had a few things in and out. 😂

You’re right, there is always a chance that I could keep it a couple years from now when the Decware is ready. But it’s more likely that I would sell the M700, PL and Harbeths once the Decware is ready.

Decided to go route 3, but found used Sutherland 20/20 and Pontus DAC instead of the MF pieces.

So for now, I don’t decrease my box count at all and basically just satisfied my yearly shake up needs I suppose. Depending on how much I like the Woo set up, I still may move the speaker set up. We’ll see.

Out: MoFi FenderDeck, Pass XP-15, Luxman D-03x, Sennheiser HDV600
In: Thorens TD160 w/SME 3009, Sutherland 20/20, Pontus II 12 DAC, Woo WA-5

Now time to move everything upstairs. Not looking forward to it.

Glad you're keeping stuff!

I'm not looking forward to carrying the Luxman CD player upstairs but I'll sure have fun listening to it!

Ok guys, especially @Joe Mac because I think you researched this before... Buddy of mine looking to get a TT wired to Sonos base speaker and one wireless speaker for the house so he can wirelessly play vinyl and also streaming. Is this as simple as getting any TT with an onboard stage, a Sonos base speaker and a wireless Sonos speaker? Or are there other things needed to get the TT to work with the Sonos system?

EDIT-

This amp and one wireless speaker... I believe...

And he wants a fully auto TT so I'm thinking this one? Thoughts?

I believe the Play5 has a line in and can then port to other speakers. It was pretty quiet though from what I remember.

You have a few options. You’ve posted the amp there that would need passive speakers with it.

The turntable can be connected either directly to the line in on a five or era 300. Bear in mind you’ll need some form of phono stage on the table or separate.

Alternatively if the table isn’t near the speaker you can connect it to the port and it will stream then to any Sonos speaker around the house.

The second speaker can also be anything from their range.

So TT direct to 5 would work but likely quiet, better to use the amp if they're sending to multiple 5s

Only get the amp if the initial set up is to some passive speakers. If all the speakers are going to be active Sonos speakers and the turntable is just to be connected to a bridge into their ecosystem then that’s what the port is for.

Also with all their speakers if you buy two for the same zone you can set them up as a stereo pair in the app..

So the TT goes through the Sonos
port, and then two 5s. That does the trick?
