Yeah likely TV side you have to tell it to output sound to an external device, or enable eARC

It did automatically switch to "media player" when I had the HDMI in... I was thinking it was a NAD issue so I started reading manuals before I fried something.

Any reason why an optical connection wouldn't work? At least until I figure out HDMI?

Optical could work but usually HDMI will supercede the optical so you may have to tell the amp to take audio from the optical, or the tv to output it from there. Optical also can't do Atmos DTX etc but I don't think you're using those...

HDMI Arc plugged in to the correct slot on the Sony? There are usually several HDMI inputs but only one Arc input?
Optical is one way Arc is two way, which is the beauty of that tech.

I'm not sure if I was clear and not trying to be rude.
But can you check the input on the NAD is marked Arc and the input on the TV is marked Arc by physically where the cable connections are located.
Also how old is the HDMI cable?

Not sure. I did reset the TV and it tried doing a handshake with the ARC but nothing came through. I think I might have to do an update on the NAD3050...

I had optical to my Denon for a while and it was fine. That’s probably the path of least resistance.
Could also be how sound is coming out. If it's sending a 5.1 signal to your NAD the NAD might not know what to do. I think Linear PCM hs to be enabled or something?

That was it. Read the manual and had to dig in the TV settings to PCM only!

Nice.
No sound is better than the alternative I've usually had where the most shrill noise known to man starts coming out of the speakers. Sounds like a robot is ejaculating in my brain.

I'm actually surprised the tv was defaulting to 5.1. I've always found I have to force my cable box into 5.1, they always default to stereo.
