Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Just ordered a couple of RSL SpeedWoofer 10S MKIIs to replace my venerable SVS cylinder. My current harebrained scheme is to wire one up in the front corner using speaker-level inputs from my amp switch (so it's receiving full-range signal from whichever amp is active) and then using a wireless adapter to set the other one up behind my couch as a dedicated LFE sub.

I run 2 Speedwoofer10s. I’ve tried all the connection options and have settled on the wireless being the best.
  1. I could never discern a sound difference with the other connections.
  2. No wires all over the room
  3. Placement options
Also, 2 subs takes a lot of the guess work out of placement. I have one in the front right of the room and the other behind me diagonally from the front.

Enjoy yours. They are great subs!

My thought is that the one that will directly replace the SVS (which remains is a great sub after 16 years, and I am giving to a friend) will be fed a full-band signal through my amplifier switch, so that my vinyl setup and the home theater both get another 15hz or so of bass extension. Then the second will rock the couch point-blank during movie watching. Best of both worlds, I hope?

We're in a townhouse, so in order to get a good visceral bass response from the SVS I have to crank it to levels that rattle the pictures on the wall/upset the neighbors. This seems like it might work to get a similar effect but with less total SPL.

They have these chairs that move with the sound effects now.
Sounds nuts butt😁 I would love to try it.

Tell me more about the amp switch?! I'm currently having to plug my sub back and forth between my music amp and my home theater receiver and that sucks! Is this something that would solve that?

I feel like we're dealing with similar situations! How's your sub currently connected?

I'm using an amplifier switch to actually swap my main speakers between a couple of tiny mono blocks I use in my analog setup and my home theater receiver.

I have a Marantz PM8006 for my dedicated music amp. Mains are running through that. When using the theater setup, I put that amp into Power Amp Direct mode and the towers are controlled by the Denon receiver that way. Both my subs are single RCA connected to the Denon for that setup. When listening to music, I unplug the main sub from the denon and connect it to the Marantz with right and left channel RCA. The other issue is that I also have to change the sub settings for each setup.
It's clunky. I likely just need a larger 3rd sub and each system can be independent. This room is large and really requires 2 subs for the theater setup

Yeah, I've had issues trying to balance my single sub for a similar use case. I eventually gave up and just started using it for LFE-only.

If you have the scratch, a REL sub allows you to use both speaker-level and LFE inputs simultaneously, and has separate gain settings for each. I just couldn't quite swallow the price tag vs. the output and ended up engineering this new, more complicated solution for which my wife will doubtless mock me incessantly.

Ooof, yeah, just looking at the prices on those. Yowza. Considering i really want to upgrade my towers and I need a more capable center channel, I will likely just keep this annoying sub setup for awhile. Ha

I’m running one of the little REL TZeros. They’re great and in the grand scheme of subwoofer prices pretty keenly priced and give pretty great boom for their buck.

Hi, how’s everyone doing? It’s been a while since I’ve been able to engage with the site properly.

I need some advice. I’m looking to get a hi fi, for my girlfriend’s house, the idea will be to move some records over there bit by bit.

She has squarish living room but not an ideal space to have speakers in a good listening position. 2 walls with doors, one with a fireplace and the other a near full length window. I was thinking maybe some small bookshelves speakers that I could move around and play with positioning a bit and wouldn’t be too imposing. Maybe some super dentons and get a sub at a future date if it was needed.

I’ve got a big living room with tall ceilings and an odd shaped room. A Musical Fidelity MS3i, Arcam phono stage. Old audiolab hidden away acting as a DAC, a fairly old Blusound node and a technical 1200g. B&w 683 s2. Mostly listen to records tv and streamed radio.

The system can sound amazing, generally sounds great but I’m sure like anything can be improved (probably a lot).

Apologies for the rambling pre-amble but thought context might help.

The question

Would a digital amp with Dirac sound as good, or better than the Musical Fidelity class A/b? I don’t really see any comparisons to different types of gear.

I was looking at the NAD M10 v3, which has Dirac, maybe for my place and take the MS3i to my girlfriends or vice versa.

I’ve been reading that a lot of modern amps sound the same but Dirac can make a huge difference. Is this the case? Do I need a Dirac amp? Can dirac help with poor speaker placement or listening position? Can act as an eq?

What would the NAD sound like compared to maybe the new Musical Fidelity A1? Would I be disappointed with a digital amp after always having class A? Or, would the digital NAd make records sound better?

If I was to get a Nad, would a sanded sized one like the c399 or the 3050 be better than the m10?

Confusing where to start

Hey there, I will respond properly to this later today. I have Dirac so I've got some informed opinions to share.

I also have an equal or greater amount of wildly uninformed opinions that I will present with an almost infuriating level of unearned confidence as absolute facts.

Just a heads up.

Cheers. I’m good with uninformed confidence, quite expert at that myself from time to time. Most often coincides with some form of alcoholic refreshment.

And would be great to hear your thoughts as someone who’s lived with Dirac.

Lamborghini fail! It should be bright orange, play your records terrifyingly loud and fast and then kill you violently….
