February 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread - Games People Play

Day Three - The Game of Life - Play a record that deals with or has a song that deals with mortality

Hiatus Kaiyote - Mood Valiant

The last two songs pretty explicitly address mortality. On "Stone or Lavender" Nai Palm (one of the greatest front women people of all time), sings about her recent battle with breast cancer, the same disease that took her mother when she was a child. And on "Blood and Marrow" she sings to her beloved, and recently deceased, pet parrot, Charlie Parker. The time between the last Hiatus Kaiyote album and this one was a devastating period for Nai.

toe - the book about my idle plot on a vague anxiety

I did give a quick listen to one of their records last year, loved the during work vibe to help concentrate, then ordered 4 of their records.

I seem to blind buy a lot these days...both regular albums and scores/soundtracks to movies I haven't seen yet. Most are from artists/bands I can rely on, so it's not a huge risk. I rarely listen to those single download tracks I'm sent with pre-orders, as I like to listen to a album as a whole.

I got this one somewhat blind, I really didn't remember the music from the movie since it's been close to 30 years since I've seen it, and I'm not really an anime fan.

Day 4 : Connect 4

Tori Amos is one of my favorite artists and she had a great run of first 4 albums.

And the crown jewel of my collection and one of the rarest presses I have. I got to see Tori for the first time on her Choirgirl tour.

Day Four - Connect Four - Think of an artist that had a great four record run. Play any (or all!) of the four

Will update as the day goes on. Starting with the debut album that brings me back to my college dorm.

Pearl Jam ~ Ten

#2. This one is the one that sealed the deal for me. Really it was the MTV Awards performance of Animal where they brought out Neil Young for Rockin' in the Free World that did it.

Pearl Jam ~ Vs.

#3. Released in 1994, Last Exit is inextricably linked in my mind with Donkey Kong Country for the SNES since that came out two weeks later, and I played them both incessantly.

Pearl Jam ~ Vitalogy

#4. This one took time to digest, but definitely signaled a slide into maturity and independence. Pearl Jams 'ditch' album I suppose.

Pearl Jam ~ No Code

Hell, I'm going add a 5th to this, since it just turned 25 yesterday and it's my favorite. It also happens to be my oldest kids 25th birthday today, but I'm not going to pick favorites there...

Destroyer - Ken

Ever kind of miss out on an album by an artist you like for no good reason? Well I just kind of spaced out on this one when it came out, but this week I had some b-day gift cards to use, so I filled this gap in his discography. First listen happening right now.

Lost Girls - Menneskekollektivet

Existentialism is a recurring theme on this mind-bendingly unique record from last year. In particular, Jenny Hval's spoken poetry on the self-titled track:

🎵Sound is more familiar than subjects, and time, and time🎵
🎵We are, and sound hugs our bodies🎵
🎵There is darkness🎵
🎵Sound travels across it🎵
🎵Invisible bodies carry🎵
🎵Darkness leads us closer to what will in the future be called death🎵
🎵Which is now inseparable from what in the future will be callеd life🎵

Day Four - Connect Four
The Comet Is Coming ‎– Trust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery
The Comet Is Coming – The Afterlife
Shabaka And The Ancestors – We Are Sent Here By History
Sons Of Kemet – Black To The Future

Shabaka Hutchings' run of amazing albums is more than four long already and seems to still be getting better and better with each one. His plan of focusing primarily on one project each year where albums are concerned seems to be a very solid pace to ensure consistently fantastic results so far. Last I read, he was looking to put out his first solo record this year before returning to The Comet is Coming in 2023. I am here for the continuation of this streak, however long it lasts.

...and am grateful for the unplanned day off today that lets me really dig in and play all four of these albums, rather than having to choose only one!

I used to play Risk a lot when I was a kid but, we don't own a copy now. The game is called War here in Brazil.
As for my pick, her previous albums are so freaking great I bought this one as soon as it was announced.

Little Simz - Sometimes I might be introvert
